Xiaomi 18 Fold set to debut with CXMT LPDDR6 memory and Xring O3 chip
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is shaping up to be one of the most important foldable phone launches of the year, and its biggest upgrade may come from inside the device. Chinese memory maker CXMT has confirmed that its new LPDDR6 memory has entered mass production, with Xiaomi expected to be among the first smartphone brands to use it.
According to the announcement, the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold will feature CXMT’s LPDDR6 memory modules paired with Xiaomi’s new Xring O3 processor. The foldable is expected to launch in September, making it one of the first devices to showcase the next generation of mobile memory technology in a commercial product.
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun has also confirmed the collaboration, signaling that the company is preparing to push its in-house hardware strategy even further. The Xiaomi 18 Fold may not be the only device to benefit from this combination, as the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max is also expected to arrive with the same Xring O3 chipset and LPDDR6 memory setup.
The Xring O3 was introduced as Xiaomi’s latest flagship-grade processor. It is manufactured using TSMC’s 3 nm process, placing it among the more advanced mobile chips currently entering the market. While rival flagship processors are expected to move toward TSMC’s newer N2P node, Xiaomi’s chip still represents a major step for the company as it continues developing its own high-performance silicon.
The move to LPDDR6 could bring noticeable performance gains. Compared with LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X, LPDDR6 offers higher memory bandwidth and improved power efficiency. CXMT’s version reportedly runs at 10,667 MT/s when paired with the Xring O3 and can scale up to 12,800 MT/s. The LPDDR6 standard itself supports speeds of up to 14,400 MT/s.
Another key improvement is the wider 24-bit interface, which helps increase data throughput. This could be especially useful for demanding mobile workloads, including on-device AI processing, advanced multitasking, high-resolution photography, gaming, and integrated graphics performance. For a premium foldable like the Xiaomi 18 Fold, faster and more efficient memory could help deliver smoother overall performance while managing power consumption more effectively.
Previous leaks suggest the Xiaomi 18 Fold may also include a large 6,000mAh battery with wireless charging support, a 200MP main rear camera, and a 7.6-inch foldable display. If accurate, those specifications would position the device as a serious contender in the premium foldable smartphone market.
Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is also rumored to support LPDDR6 memory, though it is expected to use memory solutions from other major suppliers. Xiaomi’s early adoption of CXMT’s LPDDR6 modules could give the Xiaomi 18 Fold a unique selling point, especially in China’s increasingly competitive flagship phone segment.
With LPDDR6 entering mass production and the Xiaomi 18 Fold expected soon, the next wave of Android flagship devices may bring a meaningful jump in mobile performance. Faster memory, stronger AI capabilities, and more efficient hardware could make 2026 a key year for premium smartphones and foldables.
