Mystery Unboxed: Fake AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Exposed with Missing Core Components

A recent investigation uncovered a counterfeit Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, highlighting the growing issue of fake CPUs. These deceptive products have fooled even major retailers, with similar scams being exposed for both Intel and AMD processors.

In this case, a buyer received a supposedly high-end AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D from an online purchase but noticed discrepancies. After a detailed analysis conducted by a team of experts, significant differences were revealed between the legitimate Ryzen 9800X3D and the counterfeit one.

The team delved deeper, removing the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) from the fake CPU. This process revealed that the substrate beneath was completely void of any critical components, such as chiplets or I/O elements. The illusion of authenticity was maintained by manipulating the IHS to protrude slightly over the substrate.

Closer inspection of the fake CPU’s substrate uncovered more signs of its fraudulent nature. There were no solder points on the PCB, suggesting it was merely a dummy. Differences in the number and orientation of capacitors also stood out, revealing significant disparities from a genuine Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Visual examination showed that the counterfeit product’s surface markings, fonts, and color were different from those of the genuine product. Even the serial number didn’t match the one on the box it came in.

Though such incidents are rare, the discovery serves as a cautionary tale for buyers. It’s important to remain vigilant, especially when purchasing from online platforms. While counterfeit occurrences remain minimal, they underscore the necessity for thorough checks to ensure authenticity.
