Fake AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs Doing The Rounds Online, Die-Less Package & Visually Different IHS 1

Counterfeit AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs Circulating: Lack Die and Display Visible IHS Variations

AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs have become extraordinarily popular in the gaming community, partly due to recent price cuts making them more attractive compared to newer models like the Ryzen 7 9700X. However, this popularity has also made the chip a target for scammers who are selling counterfeit versions of the CPU on third-party sites.

A Romanian user recently discovered a fake Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU they had purchased from OLX, a well-known online marketplace in Asia. After experiencing issues booting the processor, the user tested the connections with a volt-meter and found nothing, prompting further investigation.

Expert Der8auer also examined the counterfeit CPU and uncovered several discrepancies. Although the packaging and serial numbers seemed legitimate, the physical attributes of the chip were notably different. Key differences included a thinner PCB (0.964 mm vs. the original 1.308 mm), different labeling positions, and various subtle differences in the integrated heat spreader (IHS).

Further inspection revealed crucial details. The capacitors lacked the protective glue residue found on genuine Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 series CPUs. Moreover, when attempting to boot the chip, there was no response, leading to the delidding of the IHS and revealing the absence of the CPU’s crucial components like the CCD and IOD.

Interestingly, the fake IHS featured a custom CNC-milled design aimed at better cooling efficiency, highlighting an effort to make the counterfeit product look convincing. Nevertheless, it remains an imitation devoid of actual functionality.

This incident underscores the importance of purchasing components from verified sellers or reputable retailers. Unverified third-party resellers often lack adequate moderation or consumer protection plans, posing significant risks to buyers. To avoid falling victim to such scams, always be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and purchase from trusted sources.
