Scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, one of the top gaming CPUs on the market. The scammers are now deploying advanced tactics to deceive consumers. A YouTuber recently examined one of these fake processors and highlighted several key factors to identify authenticity.
AMD’s new Granite Ridge desktop processors have hit the market, but the Ryzen 7 7800X3D from the Raphael series remains highly regarded for gaming and productivity. The YouTuber obtained a counterfeit Ryzen 7 7800X3D and conducted an in-depth analysis to help people avoid being scammed. The fake CPU was convincing at first glance, even featuring a matching serial number on its box, making it difficult to immediately identify its authenticity.
While the fake Ryzen 7 7800X3D bears a strong resemblance to the real CPU, certain details give it away. For example, the labels on the IHS of the counterfeit appear washed out when compared directly to a genuine one. Another significant indicator was the PCB thickness, with the fake measuring at 0.964 mm as opposed to the real one’s 1.308 mm.
Differences also extend to the capacitors around the IHS where AMD uses a protective coating on authentic CPUs, which is absent on the fake version. Despite mimicking the layout, the unauthorized processor does not have this protective feature.
Upon delidding the counterfeit CPU, it was discovered that there was nothing under the IHS, explaining its failure to boot when tested. The fake processor closely imitates the design, adding to the challenge of distinguishing it from the genuine product.
Given these sophisticated methods, consumers may find it difficult to perform exhaustive checks to verify a genuine AMD Ryzen CPU. Therefore, it is strongly advised to purchase from reliable retailers and thoroughly test any second-hand processors before finalizing transactions.
