Fake graphics cards are becoming a growing problem on online marketplaces, and the latest example shows just how far scammers are willing to go. Instead of using an older GPU, a dead chip, or a stripped-down graphics card, some sellers are now using plastic pieces designed to imitate real NVIDIA RTX GPU dies.

For years, buyers have been warned about counterfeit graphics cards, especially in online listings that offer high-end hardware at suspiciously low prices. Many of these scams have involved cards with missing components, swapped GPUs, damaged boards, or older chips being passed off as newer models. But this new case takes the deception to another level.

A recent discovery shared by a Chinese tech channel showed what appeared to be an ASUS GeForce RTX 4090. At first glance, the card looked convincing enough to fool many buyers. The cooler, PCB layout, and general appearance could easily pass as a legitimate high-end GPU to someone who does not regularly disassemble graphics cards.

However, once the cooler was removed and the thermal paste was cleaned off, the truth became obvious. The supposed GPU die was not silicon at all. It was plastic.

The card was meant to represent an RTX 4090, which should use NVIDIA’s AD102 Ada Lovelace GPU. The fake chip even had markings printed on it to make it look authentic. But closer inspection revealed several major red flags. The font used on the chip did not match NVIDIA’s real markings, the surrounding layout was incorrect, and the date code appeared to suggest the GPU was manufactured in 2030.

That alone should be enough to raise suspicion.

A real RTX 4090 GPU die has specific markings, a precise layout, a QR code, and carefully arranged surrounding components. In this fake version, the details were wrong. The QR code was missing, nearby capacitors were not positioned correctly, and the surface of the “die” did not feel like real silicon. When touched, it had a noticeably different texture, confirming that the entire chip was simply a plastic imitation with etched labeling.

Even the memory chips on the graphics card were not useful. Although they looked real at first glance, they were reportedly scrap memory dies with no functional value. In other words, the card was not a damaged RTX 4090, not a repaired card, and not a downgraded model. It was essentially a fake product built to look valuable from the outside.

This kind of scam is especially dangerous because many buyers never remove the cooler from a graphics card. Most people purchasing a used GPU will inspect the exterior, check the fans, look at the ports, and maybe ask for a screenshot or benchmark result. But a fake card like this can appear convincing until someone physically opens it up.

The price was another major warning sign. The fake RTX 4090 was reportedly listed for around 1,500 RMB, which is roughly $220. That is far below the real market value of an RTX 4090. Even used RTX 4090 graphics cards continue to sell for prices much higher than that, often near or above their original launch price depending on region and availability.

When a high-end GPU is listed for a fraction of its normal value, buyers should treat it as a serious red flag. Scammers often rely on the excitement of a “too good to miss” deal to pressure people into making quick decisions. With demand for GPUs still strong and AI-related hardware demand affecting component prices, many gamers are looking for bargains. Unfortunately, that creates the perfect environment for counterfeit listings.

This is not the first time buyers have received fake or incorrect graphics card products. In past cases, customers have opened GPU boxes only to find rocks, detergent, or other useless items instead of graphics cards. There have also been reports of dead cards, modified boards, and lower-end GPUs being disguised as premium models.

The latest plastic GPU die scam shows that counterfeiters are becoming more creative. They are not just selling broken hardware anymore. They are manufacturing visual imitations designed to fool buyers long enough to complete a sale.

Anyone shopping for a used graphics card should be extremely cautious. Always buy from trusted sellers, check the seller’s history, request real photos and videos of the card running, and avoid listings with prices that seem unrealistic. If possible, ask for proof through GPU identification software, live benchmark results, and clear images of the serial number. For expensive cards like the RTX 4090, buying from a reliable retailer or a seller with buyer protection is much safer than chasing an unusually cheap deal.

The main lesson is simple: if an RTX 4090 is being sold for the price of a budget GPU, something is almost certainly wrong. Fake GPUs are getting harder to spot, and this plastic chip example proves that buyers need to be more careful than ever when shopping online.
