Leica vs. Zeiss Showdown: Leak Reveals Xiaomi 18 and Vivo X500 Camera Battle

Xiaomi 18 Pro Max vs Vivo X500 Pro Max: September could bring a major smartphone camera showdown

The next big Android camera battle is shaping up for September, and it could be one of the most exciting flagship contests of the year. Xiaomi and Vivo are both expected to launch their next-generation premium phones in China around the same period, with the Xiaomi 18 series and Vivo X500 series leading the charge.

The spotlight will likely fall on the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max and Vivo X500 Pro Max, two camera-focused flagships rumored to bring major imaging upgrades, powerful new sensors, and high-end displays. With Leica-tuned imaging on Xiaomi’s side and Zeiss-backed camera technology on Vivo’s side, both brands appear ready to compete aggressively for the best smartphone camera title.

According to information shared by a well-known industry leaker, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max may take a bold approach by using two 200MP cameras. The main camera is said to feature a large 1/1.28-inch 200MP sensor, supported by the latest LOFIC technology. This should help improve dynamic range, allowing the phone to capture more detail in bright highlights and dark shadows, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

The telephoto camera could also use a 200MP sensor, though slightly smaller at 1/1.56 inches. This camera is expected to offer around 3x optical zoom with an f/2.4 aperture. More importantly, the telephoto setup may support close-range telephoto macro photography, giving users more flexibility when shooting small subjects from a short distance.

The leak also suggests that Xiaomi has redesigned the sensor and mirror system used in the zoom module, likely referring to improvements in the periscope-style camera structure. If accurate, this could result in sharper zoom shots, better low-light telephoto performance, and improved focusing.

Vivo, meanwhile, appears to be taking a different route with the Vivo X500 Pro Max. Instead of chasing dual 200MP cameras, Vivo may continue using a 50MP Sony main sensor with a large 1/1.28-inch size. This sensor is also expected to gain LOFIC technology, which could improve dynamic range compared to the previous generation.

For zoom photography, Vivo may once again rely on a large 1/1.4-inch 200MP telephoto sensor. This could make the Vivo X500 Pro Max especially strong in portrait shots, long-range zoom, and detailed telephoto images.

One of the more interesting possible upgrades is in the ultra-wide camera. Vivo is reportedly testing a larger 50MP Sony IMX8xx series sensor for the ultra-wide lens. If the component passes internal testing and makes it into the final device, it could deliver better detail, improved night shots, and stronger edge-to-edge image quality compared to typical ultra-wide cameras.

Display specifications are also starting to emerge. The Vivo X500 Pro Max is rumored to feature a flat 6.85-inch OLED display with 2.5D glass, 2K resolution, and a smooth 144Hz refresh rate. The panel is expected to come from BOE and may offer extremely high PWM dimming, which could make the screen more comfortable for users sensitive to flicker.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is also expected to feature a large display, reportedly around 6.9 inches. It may offer similar premium qualities, including high resolution and slim bezels, though its refresh rate is currently rumored to be 120Hz instead of 144Hz.

The Xiaomi 18 series, Vivo X500 series, and Oppo Find X10 series are all expected to arrive around the same time in China. That could make September a major month for flagship Android phones, especially for users who care about mobile photography.

If the leaked details prove accurate, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max may appeal to users who want maximum megapixel power and a heavily upgraded zoom system. The Vivo X500 Pro Max, on the other hand, could focus on sensor quality, dynamic range, and a more balanced camera setup with a potentially stronger ultra-wide lens.

Either way, the next generation of flagship smartphone cameras looks ready to push mobile photography even further. For buyers waiting for the best camera phone of the year, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max and Vivo X500 Pro Max may be two of the most important devices to watch.
