Apple’s foldable iPhone is reportedly moving closer to reality, and the latest supply chain claims suggest the device could arrive as one of the most premium smartphones the company has ever released.
Samsung Display has reportedly received approval from Apple to begin mass production of OLED modules for Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone, which is currently being referred to by some as the iPhone Ultra. If accurate, this would mark a major milestone for Apple’s first entry into the foldable phone market, a category the company has watched carefully for years before making its move.
According to industry reports from Korea, Samsung Display has secured an exclusive three-year supply agreement for the foldable OLED panels. The initial order is said to include around three million foldable displays, suggesting Apple may be preparing the device as a limited, high-end product rather than a mass-market iPhone at launch.
That strategy would make sense. A foldable iPhone is expected to be expensive, likely positioned above the current iPhone Pro Max models. With a smaller first production run, Apple could target early adopters and premium buyers while closely managing quality, availability, and production risks.
Production is reportedly beginning at Samsung’s Vietnam facility, where the company handles back-end processing for foldable phone displays. Samsung is said to have exceeded Apple’s required yield target of 70%, meaning a strong percentage of panels are meeting Apple’s quality and performance standards.
That detail is important because Apple is known for strict hardware requirements, especially for components that affect the user experience directly. A foldable display must be thin, durable, bright, efficient, and resistant to visible creasing. If Samsung has passed Apple’s threshold by a comfortable margin, it suggests the display technology may finally be ready for an Apple-branded foldable device.
The foldable OLED panel is also expected to use advanced CoE technology, short for Color filter on Encapsulation. This approach removes the traditional polarizer layer and places a color filter directly over the encapsulation layer. The result can be a thinner display structure with improved brightness and better overall efficiency.
Samsung is also reportedly using its newer M16 organic OLED materials for Apple’s foldable iPhone display. This material set is expected to improve brightness, color accuracy, panel lifespan, and power efficiency compared with earlier OLED generations. For a foldable iPhone, those improvements could be critical, especially if Apple wants the device to offer strong battery life while powering a larger flexible screen.
However, not everything appears to be fully resolved yet. The hinge is reportedly still causing concern, although the issue has shifted during development.
Earlier concerns were said to involve durability, which is one of the biggest challenges for any foldable phone. That problem has reportedly been addressed. Now, the remaining issue appears to be unwanted noise from the hinge after assembly.
Apple’s foldable iPhone is said to use a 3D-printed hinge module, and some units have reportedly produced a squeaking sound. While this may sound minor compared with display durability or battery performance, it matters greatly for a premium Apple product. A foldable phone that makes noise when opened or closed could hurt the feeling of precision and luxury that buyers would expect from a device likely to carry a very high price.
The hinge is arguably one of the most important parts of any foldable smartphone. It affects durability, opening and closing smoothness, screen support, crease behavior, and the overall feel of the device. For Apple, which often emphasizes hardware polish and quiet mechanical refinement, even a small hinge noise could be unacceptable before launch.
The good news is that the reported hinge issue is believed to be a manufacturing refinement problem rather than a fundamental design flaw. If that is the case, Apple and its suppliers may be able to resolve it without making major changes to the product.
Still, the fix could reportedly cause a slight delay. Industry insiders suggest the schedule may slip by around two weeks to one month, depending on how quickly the hinge manufacturing process is improved. Even with that potential delay, the foldable iPhone is still expected to stay within its rumored September announcement window.
If Apple does unveil the iPhone Ultra in September, it could become one of the biggest smartphone launches in years. The foldable phone market has grown steadily, but Apple’s arrival would likely bring far more mainstream attention to the category.
For now, the biggest signs point to a premium foldable iPhone with an advanced OLED display, exclusive Samsung-made panels, a limited initial production volume, and a price that may place it above Apple’s current flagship models. The remaining challenge appears to be making the hinge feel as refined as the rest of the device.
Apple may be late to foldable phones, but if the company gets the display, hinge, software, and durability right, the iPhone Ultra could become the foldable device that finally pushes the category into the mainstream.
