A brand-new homebrew first-person shooter has quietly arrived on the Sega Saturn, and it’s turning heads in the retro community for both its style and its technical ambition. Vigilant Paradise is a Miami Vice-inspired action game built for original Saturn hardware, created over five years by solo developer Riccardo Campione and backed by Playnautic.
Although the game first appeared with a low-key launch in early November 2025, it didn’t really break into wider conversation until early 2026, when retro fans on Reddit started sharing that a full Saturn FPS had seemingly dropped out of nowhere. For Sega Saturn owners and collectors who love seeing the system pushed to its limits, this is the kind of release that feels like a time capsule from the 1990s—except it’s brand new.
Vigilant Paradise follows two renegade plain-clothes cops, Vince Dimare and Paolo Diterra. After racking up far too much overtime while fighting crime in less-than-by-the-book ways, the duo gets forced into taking a vacation to the sun-soaked City of Paradise. Vince quickly complains about the boredom, but the calm doesn’t last long. Before they can settle into beachside downtime, the pair find themselves tangled up with a terrorist organization, setting the stage for gunfights, story-driven missions, and plenty of retro-cop drama.
One of the big draws here is how much game is packed into this project. Campione set out to capture the essence of 90s console gaming, and the result is a full single-player campaign featuring detailed low-poly 3D environments, six levels beyond the tutorial, two playable protagonists with different weapon options, and a branching narrative designed to add replay value.
It’s not just polygonal nostalgia, either. Vigilant Paradise includes more than 15 minutes of in-engine cutscenes that lean into the era’s signature “cheesy” tone in the best way. The dialogue is fully voice acted, and the soundtrack goes all-in on a synth-heavy vibe that fits the neon-soaked, retro-cop aesthetic.
On the technical side, the project is an impressive showcase for Sega Saturn homebrew development. Campione describes the game as “a symphony of Japanese silicon,” saying it makes use of both Saturn CPUs, both VDPs, standard memory chips, plus CD audio and PC playback. The game targets a 320×240 resolution and uses an uncapped frame rate, while also automatically adjusting for NTSC or PAL. In practical terms, that means it’s designed to avoid the slowdown issues that can sometimes affect 50Hz systems.
As for how to play, Vigilant Paradise is flexible depending on how you use your Saturn today. It can be run on original hardware via burned CD-R discs, ODE setups, and physical cartridges, and it’s also playable through emulation once downloaded.
Vigilant Paradise is currently sold digitally on Itch.io for $10, which feels like a modest ask considering the scope of the campaign and the years of solo, self-funded work behind it. Campione has also suggested he’d be open to doing a proper physical release if there’s enough demand—so if you’re the type who loves adding new Saturn releases to your shelf, that may be worth keeping an eye on.
