Tipster shares new iPhone camera details

Tipster Claims Apple Is Testing a Larger iPhone Camera Sensor, With Ultrawide Upgrade and Improved Stabilization Also Expected

A new iPhone camera rumor is starting to pick up steam, with a well-known tipster suggesting Apple is actively testing a fresh image sensor. The catch is that the details are still murky, including whether this upgraded camera hardware is intended for the iPhone 18 lineup or being saved for a later, bigger release. Even so, two specific claims are drawing attention: the sensor size being tested and a potential first-ever stabilization upgrade for the iPhone’s ultrawide camera.

The leak points to a 1/1.2-inch sensor currently under evaluation. That measurement matters because it matches the size commonly associated with a 200MP smartphone camera sensor Apple has reportedly explored before. If both rumors are describing the same component, it may be too ambitious—or too soon—for the iPhone 18 generation. Recent talk around Apple’s camera roadmap has repeatedly suggested the company will stick with a 48MP setup in the nearer term, making a jump to 200MP feel more like a milestone upgrade than a routine annual change.

That’s why some observers believe this could be tied to a future “anniversary” iPhone, where Apple traditionally leans into more dramatic hardware updates. A 200MP camera paired with a large 1/1.2-inch sensor could be an attention-grabbing leap, especially for users who prioritize sharper detail, improved digital cropping, and cleaner high-resolution video.

In terms of physical size, the 1/1.2-inch sensor is said to be around 6.67 percent larger than the current sensor expected in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. While that percentage may sound modest, even small size increases can help when it comes to image quality, because a larger sensor can generally capture more light and deliver improved dynamic range.

The other big part of the rumor is about the ultrawide camera. According to the same source, Apple is testing Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for ultrawide shots—something iPhone ultrawide cameras have notably lacked so far. If this happens, it could be a meaningful real-world upgrade, particularly for low-light ultrawide photos, nighttime cityscapes, indoor group shots, and handheld ultrawide video where tiny shakes often show up more than people expect.

There is one potential challenge, though. On paper, 200MP sounds like an automatic win, but higher megapixel sensors often rely on smaller individual pixels. Smaller pixels typically gather less light, which can lead to noisier, grainier images—especially in dim conditions. The tipster cautions that the pixel details still need verification, which suggests Apple may still be experimenting with different implementations rather than locking final specs.

If Apple does move toward a 200MP iPhone camera, expect the company to lean hard on computational photography to offset the downsides of tiny pixels. Techniques like multi-frame processing, advanced noise reduction, smart HDR, and pixel binning could help preserve detail while keeping photos cleaner and videos smoother.

For now, this remains in the testing-and-rumor stage, but the combination of a large 1/1.2-inch sensor and the possibility of OIS on the ultrawide camera hints at a future iPhone camera upgrade that could be far more than incremental—whenever Apple decides it’s ready to ship it.
