Tesla is pushing the boundaries of innovation at every turn, and their latest endeavor with Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 13 is no exception. During the much-anticipated Cybercab event, attendees witnessed all the robo-taxis equipped with the state-of-the-art FSD 13 technology. This roll-out is still in its infancy, accessible exclusively to those lucky owners with Tesla’s cutting-edge Hardware 4.0 computers.
However, Tesla hasn’t forgotten its loyal community driving vehicles with the older Hardware 3.0. Although these owners have only recently gained access to the updated FSD 12.6—which brings notable improvements—there remains hope for an eventual upgrade to FSD 13. As Vaibhav Taneja noted during the Q4 investor call, Tesla is committed to ensuring that these older systems are not left behind, even if they trail behind their newer counterparts.
The burning question on everyone’s mind is whether Tesla’s HW3 vehicles will ultimately receive FSD 13 or will have to wait for FSD 14. Elon Musk has hinted at an unsupervised FSD launch, suggesting that Tesla is diligently working on a solution. If FSD 13 proves incompatible with HW3, Musk assured fans at a previous call that Tesla would upgrade their systems to HW4—at no extra cost to the owners.
Elon Musk has again reaffirmed this commitment, even acknowledging the financial strain it could place on the company. The possibility of a comprehensive hardware upgrade, particularly for those who invested in the FSD package, seems increasingly likely despite the challenges it presents. This gesture remains consistent with Tesla’s ethos of innovation and customer care.
As the Cybercab ride-share platform gears up to launch for Tesla’s general public next year, the company might yet resolve compatibility issues with FSD 13 on HW3. However, owners of the older models should be prepared for an inevitable shift to HW4. While the task is daunting, Tesla’s steadfast promise ensures that these upgrades will be delivered cost-free, maintaining their pledge to drive forward without leaving any Tesla in the rearview mirror.
