Tern Unveils New HSD Electric Cargo Bike With Bosch Power, Bigger Hauling Capacity, and Compact Design
Tern has introduced the newest generation of its popular HSD electric cargo bike in North America and Europe, bringing a major refresh to one of the brand’s most practical urban mobility models. The latest Tern HSD keeps the compact footprint that made the lineup appealing to city riders, but adds stronger performance, improved stability, upgraded components, and smarter security features.
One of the biggest changes is the updated Bosch motor system. In Europe, the second-generation Tern HSD is equipped with Bosch’s latest Performance Line fifth-generation Smart System motor. In the United States, the bike comes with the Bosch Performance Line Sport motor, offering up to 90 Nm of torque and Class 3 pedal-assist speeds of up to 28 mph, or 45 km/h.
That added power should make a noticeable difference when carrying groceries, gear, or passengers, especially on hills or longer commutes. For riders looking to replace short car trips with an electric cargo bike, the extra torque and higher assisted speed make the new HSD a more capable everyday transportation option.
Tern has also redesigned the frame from the ground up. The new HSD uses a step-through 6061 aluminum alloy frame with cargo-focused geometry, making it easier to mount and dismount while carrying heavy loads. The longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity are designed to improve balance, confidence, and handling, particularly when the bike is fully loaded.
Despite being built for cargo duties, the Tern HSD remains impressively compact. It measures just 68.5 inches, or 174 cm, in length, making it shorter than many competing electric cargo bikes. That compact size should be especially useful for riders who live in apartments, need to navigate tight bike storage areas, or want an e-bike that is easier to park in crowded urban spaces.
Even with its smaller footprint, the new Tern HSD is built to carry serious weight. The total maximum load capacity is 190 kg, or 419 lb, while the rear rack alone can support up to 80 kg, or 176 lb. This makes it suitable for carrying children, cargo bags, daily shopping, work equipment, or other heavy items without needing a full-size longtail cargo bike.
Power comes from a 545 Wh battery, with Tern claiming a range of up to 107 km, or 66 miles, on a single charge. Actual range will depend on factors such as rider weight, cargo load, terrain, assist level, and weather conditions, but the battery capacity should be enough for many daily commutes and errands.
Buyers can choose between two drivetrain options. One setup pairs a 3X3 NINE internal gear hub with a Gates Carbon Drive belt, offering a low-maintenance and clean-running alternative to a traditional chain. The other option uses a wireless electronic drivetrain from TRP with fully automatic shifting, designed to make riding simpler and more convenient, especially in stop-and-go city traffic.
The handlebar-mounted color display gives riders quick access to essential information, including assist mode, battery status, and ride data. The new HSD also includes hydraulic disc brakes for reliable stopping power, which is especially important on a cargo e-bike designed to carry heavier loads.
Tern has added several practical features aimed at urban riders. The bike supports vertical parking, helping owners save space at home or in storage areas. Security features include GPS tracking, an e-bike lock, and an alarm system, giving riders extra protection when leaving the bike parked in public.
The latest Tern HSD will be available in four models, with pricing starting at $4,999. With its Bosch motor options, compact cargo-friendly design, high payload capacity, belt drive availability, and built-in security technology, the new HSD is positioned as a premium electric cargo bike for families, commuters, and city riders who want a practical alternative to a car.
