Bosch Introduces Its First Hub Motor for Sleek Urban E-Bikes
Bosch is taking a major step in the e-bike market with the launch of its first in-house hub motor system. Known for its widely used mid-drive e-bike motors, the company is now expanding into a new category with the Bosch Hub Line, a compact drive system designed especially for modern city e-bikes.
The new Bosch hub motor is built to deliver a smooth, agile, and natural riding experience. It offers up to 400 watts of peak power and 45 Nm of torque, giving urban riders enough support for daily commutes, quick errands, and relaxed city travel. One of its standout features is its low pedalling resistance once the rider exceeds 25 km/h, making the bike feel more natural when motor assistance cuts off under European e-bike regulations.
At just 2.3 kilograms and only 100 millimetres in diameter, the Bosch Hub Line motor is notably compact. Its small size allows it to blend neatly into the rear wheel, helping e-bike manufacturers design bicycles that look cleaner and less bulky. For riders who prefer an e-bike that does not immediately look heavily motorized, this could be a major advantage.
For now, the announced specifications apply to the European version of the system. Bosch may later offer variants for other markets where e-bike power and speed regulations differ.
Alongside the new hub motor, Bosch has also introduced the PowerTube 360 battery. This slim battery has a diameter of 68 millimetres, weighs 2.1 kilograms, and provides a capacity of 360 Wh. While that capacity is lower than some larger e-bike batteries, it is a practical fit for lightweight urban e-bikes where compact design, reduced weight, and everyday usability matter more than extreme range.
The PowerTube 360 can be integrated into the bike frame either as a fixed battery or as a removable unit, depending on how manufacturers choose to design their models. Riders who need extra range will also be able to use range-extending options such as the PowerMore 250, making the system more flexible for longer rides or heavier daily use.
Bosch is also updating the control experience with a new LED Controller. This component replaces the previous LED Remote and features a smaller, more refined design. With five buttons positioned for convenient thumb operation, it is intended to make switching assist modes and managing ride functions easier while keeping the cockpit clean and uncluttered.
For riders who want a display, Bosch will offer the Intuvia 200. This compact 2.4-inch screen provides essential riding information in a simple format, making it suitable for urban e-bikes where ease of use and visibility are key.
As with its other e-bike systems, Bosch is not simply selling a separate motor. The Hub Line is designed as a complete e-bike ecosystem, combining the motor, battery, controller, display, and optional range extender into one integrated platform. This approach allows bicycle manufacturers to build polished, reliable, and well-connected electric bikes around Bosch components.
The Bosch Hub Line is expected to appear first on city-focused e-bikes, with early compatible models already being announced by select manufacturers. Its compact motor, slim battery, and low-resistance ride feel suggest that Bosch is aiming directly at urban riders who want an e-bike that is light, efficient, elegant, and easy to use in everyday traffic.
With this launch, Bosch is expanding beyond its traditional mid-drive strength and entering the hub motor space with a system that prioritizes clean design, practical city performance, and seamless integration. For commuters and urban cyclists, the new Bosch Hub Line could make the next generation of electric city bikes feel more natural, lighter, and more stylish than ever.
