Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra runs Fallout 4 and many other PC games with more than playable frame rates

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is redefining the boundaries of mobile gaming by running PC games with impressive frame rates. A recent demonstration revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered smartphone is capable of running a host of classic and beloved PC titles via an emulator known as Winlator. While this emulator is not officially designed for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, clever modifications have made it possible to bypass this limitation.

Enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the Galaxy S24 Ultra can handle games like Fallout 4, Far Cry, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and Bioshock Remastered. In particular, the performance of Fallout 4 on this smartphone suggests a substantial leap in the capability of mobile processors, as it delivers more than just playable frame rates.

In addition to these classics, the emulator also supports lighter titles, exemplified by Cuphead, which was reported to run at a smooth 60 FPS on the 512GB version of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, a device you might find available online for around $1,240.

For a comprehensive PC gaming atmosphere, the Samsung DeX functionality plays a pivotal role. DeX essentially transforms the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s interface into a desktop-like experience, allowing users to connect the device to an external display for enhanced gaming sessions.

There are a few complexities and areas for improvement with the emulator setup, however. For instance, the modified version of Winlator appears to operate in Chinese, with no immediate option for changing the language to English found during the demonstration.

Furthermore, integrating the platform with Steam remains a hurdle, as installation was not successful in the test. Instead, the demonstration leaned on GoG game installers and indicated that DRM-free game repacks would likely be compatible.

In its current form, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset within the Galaxy S24 Ultra shows considerable promise when it comes to high-performance gaming on a modified emulator. With dedicated optimizations and further development, the potential for an even more refined gaming experience on this smartphone is clearly on the horizon.

Achieving a PC-like gaming experience on a smartphone is no small feat, and these initial benchmarks with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra are noteworthy. It’s an exciting development for gamers and tech enthusiasts alike, illustrating the rapid advancement of mobile technology and its ever-closing gap with traditional computing platforms. As mobile processors continue to improve, we can likely expect even greater capabilities and smoother performances from smartphones in gaming scenarios.
