The Elder Scrolls VI Is Playable at Bethesda, but Xbox Says the Big Reveal Will Wait
The Elder Scrolls VI remains one of the most highly anticipated open-world RPGs in gaming, standing alongside GTA 6 as a title fans are desperate to see in action. But while excitement is still strong, patience is wearing thin. Bethesda first teased the next mainline Elder Scrolls game at E3 2018 with a brief logo reveal, and since then, official updates have been extremely limited.
For longtime fans, the wait feels especially long. The gap between The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was around four years. Oblivion arrived in 2006, followed by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, just five years later. Now, more than a decade has passed since Skyrim became a global phenomenon, and The Elder Scrolls VI still has no trailer, gameplay showcase, release window, or confirmed setting.
However, there is now a small but promising update. Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer at Xbox, recently discussed the current state of The Elder Scrolls VI in an interview with Variety. According to Booty, Bethesda is still working carefully on the game and wants to reveal it only when the timing is right.
Booty explained that one of the biggest challenges is balancing fan excitement with realistic expectations. Xbox and Bethesda know players want to see what is coming, but they also do not want to show the game too early. When The Elder Scrolls VI is finally revealed properly, the goal is to present the best possible version of the game and make it clear that launch is not too far away.
He also confirmed that he has visited Bethesda, sat down with Todd Howard, and seen The Elder Scrolls VI running. His impression was very positive, saying the game looks “amazing” and is progressing well.
That may not be the release date update fans were hoping for, but it does suggest that The Elder Scrolls VI is now far enough along to be playable internally. For a game that has remained mostly hidden since its announcement, that detail alone is enough to spark fresh excitement across the community.
Still, Xbox has not provided any official timeline for when the first gameplay trailer might arrive. There is also no confirmation about platforms, launch year, or whether the game will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Since Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company, questions about platform availability have been a major topic among fans.
Speculation is already growing online about when Bethesda might finally lift the curtain. Some fans believe November 15, 2026, could be a possible date for a major announcement, as it would mark Bethesda’s 40th anniversary. While that theory is not confirmed, it would be a fitting moment for the studio to celebrate its history with a major reveal of its most anticipated upcoming RPG.
For now, The Elder Scrolls VI remains surrounded by mystery. Bethesda has made it clear in the past that the game is a long-term project, and the studio has also been focused on other major releases in recent years. But with Xbox leadership now confirming that the game is playable and looking impressive, fans finally have a new reason to believe that the long silence may eventually come to an end.
Until Bethesda decides the time is right, players will have to keep waiting. The good news is that The Elder Scrolls VI is real, it is in active development, and according to Xbox, it is coming along well. The bad news is that the first true reveal may still be some time away.
