Samsung is poised to make a major comeback in the high-bandwidth memory race, with its next-generation HBM4 modules reportedly set to land inside NVIDIA’s upcoming Vera Rubin AI platform. If the latest industry chatter proves accurate, Samsung could begin supplying HBM4 for Vera Rubin as early as June, marking a sharp turnaround for a business that faced customer setbacks only a few quarters ago.
HBM4 is widely viewed as a breakthrough generation of AI memory, built to deliver the bandwidth and efficiency demanded by modern data center GPUs. What’s putting Samsung in a strong position this time is speed. The company’s HBM4 is said to reach 11 Gbps and beyond, outpacing the typical industry baseline and aligning with the higher performance targets NVIDIA reportedly wants for its next wave of AI accelerators. As AI workloads evolve toward more autonomous, “agentic” systems that require faster data movement and larger memory pipelines, memory bandwidth becomes a make-or-break component. Reports indicate Samsung is using a logic base die manufactured on a 4nm process sourced internally from its own foundry operations. In contrast, competing HBM suppliers are expected to rely on external foundry capacity for their logic dies, which can add complexity to scheduling and deliveries.
