In an intriguing fusion of scientific innovation and DIY enthusiasm, The Thought Emporium has created an open-source marvel known as the XJ9. This exceptional radio telescope is designed with modularity in mind, capable of picking up 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies. While it boasts fascinating add-ons, like an auto dart turret and knife arm, it’s the telescope’s core function that truly captivates.
Sculpted from inspiration drawn from radio astronomy, the team has refined their previous efforts, resulting in a highly efficient system that can visualize microwaves emitted by Wi-Fi routers. These microwaves vibrate at around 2.4 GHz, which is part of the spectrum of light, enabling the XJ9 to capture these frequencies. Similar to how radio telescopes in astronomy visualize cosmic activities like black holes and quasars through radio frequencies, the XJ9 does the same for Wi-Fi, albeit on a smaller scale.
Crafted primarily from 3D-printed components, the XJ9 is enhanced with features like geared stepper motors and belt drives. Equipped with an antenna, it uses a software-defined radio (SDR) setup to convert incoming radio waves into data. For this task, the HackRF SDR is utilized to intercept signals from routers, and GNU Radio processes this data to generate scans of the environment. Initial trials faced hiccups, as normalization issues with GNU Radio led to flawed readings. However, a tweak in configuration allowed the XJ9 to accurately map Wi-Fi radiation hotspots.
Beyond its current capabilities, the team envisions the XJ9 paving the way for groundbreaking applications, particularly in passive radar technology.
