Lexar Muse SSD launches as an ultra-thin portable drive with magnetic design
Lexar has unveiled the Muse, a new portable SSD designed to stand out with an exceptionally slim profile and a sleek, modern look. Built for users who care about portability, style, and fast external storage, the Lexar Muse SSD is expected to arrive in 512GB and 1TB storage options.
The biggest highlight is its thinness. Lexar says the Muse measures around 3.8 mm, or 0.15 inches, at its thickest point, while the edges taper down to just 1 mm. That makes it one of the thinnest portable SSD designs aimed at mainstream consumers. It also weighs only 26.5 grams, making it light enough to carry almost anywhere without adding noticeable bulk.
To achieve this ultra-slim body, Lexar uses a custom ultra-thin PCB inside the drive. Despite the compact design, the company claims the Muse can still deliver fast transfer speeds, with up to 1,050 MB/s read speeds and 1,000 MB/s write speeds. Those numbers place it in line with many popular portable SSDs on the market, making it suitable for moving large files, editing media, backing up photos and videos, or expanding storage for laptops and mobile devices.
One detail that may divide users is the connector. Instead of a built-in USB-C port on the SSD itself, the Lexar Muse relies on a proprietary SnapLink magnetic cable. This cable connects to the rear of the drive through a spring-loaded magnetic interface, while the other end uses USB-C for connecting to phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.
This design helps preserve the clean, thin appearance of the drive, but it also means users will need to keep track of the included cable. If the cable is lost or damaged, replacing it may not be as simple as grabbing a standard USB-C cable.
Lexar is also positioning the Muse as a strong companion for modern iPhone users. The SSD comes with a sleeve that supports MagSafe-style attachment, allowing it to snap onto the back of compatible iPhones. This could make it especially appealing to mobile creators who record high-resolution video and need external storage that stays attached while filming. The magnetic sleeve may also work with MacBooks or other devices that have a compatible magnetic surface.
Pricing has not yet been announced. However, given the premium ultra-thin design, magnetic cable system, and current market conditions affecting memory and storage components, the Lexar Muse SSD may arrive with a higher-than-average price tag.
The Lexar Muse portable SSD is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of the year. For users who want a compact, stylish, and highly portable SSD for phones, laptops, and creative workflows, it could be one of the more eye-catching storage accessories to watch.
