Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD Debuts With a 1mm Edge Design for Mobile Creators
Lexar has introduced the Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD, a new external storage drive built for creators who need fast, compact storage that can travel easily with a smartphone or camera setup. Unveiled at IFA 2026 in Berlin, the Muse stands out for its incredibly thin profile, measuring just 3.8mm at its thickest point and tapering down to only 1mm at the edges.
The company describes the Muse as the world’s thinnest portable SSD, targeting mobile creators who record high-resolution video and need dependable external storage without adding bulk. Traditional portable SSDs are often compact, but they still require a standard enclosure and a built-in USB-C port. Lexar has taken a different approach with the Muse, focusing on an ultra-slim body that is easier to carry and attach to mobile devices.
The Lexar Muse measures 80 x 48mm and features a precision-machined unibody metal enclosure. To make the drive this thin, Lexar used an ultra-thin PCB architecture, high-density NAND stacking, and a carefully optimized internal component layout. These design choices allow the SSD to maintain a very slim shape while still offering the speed expected from modern portable storage.
One of the most notable changes is the connection system. Instead of placing a regular USB Type-C port directly on the SSD, Lexar developed a magnetic data connection system using spring-loaded pins. The included SnapLink Magnetic Cable attaches to the drive with the help of N52-grade neodymium magnets, which are designed to keep the connection properly aligned during use.
The Muse is also designed with smartphone workflows in mind. With its magnetic sleeve, the SSD can attach to the back of compatible MagSafe iPhones, making it especially useful for video creators who record directly from their phones. Compatible iPhone models can record Apple ProRes 4K video at up to 120 frames per second directly to the Muse, giving creators a portable way to capture large video files without relying only on internal phone storage.
Despite its extremely thin design, the Lexar Muse still aims to deliver strong performance. The portable SSD is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s. That level of performance should make it suitable for demanding tasks such as transferring large media files, recording high-resolution footage, and editing content on the go.
Lexar plans to release the Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD in 512GB and 1TB storage capacities. The drive is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. Pricing has not yet been announced.
With its ultra-thin metal body, magnetic cable system, and support for direct high-quality video recording on compatible smartphones, the Lexar Muse could become an appealing portable SSD option for mobile filmmakers, vloggers, and content creators who want fast external storage in the smallest possible form factor.
