Meta’s new AI app Muse is gaining attention, but its launch is off to a measured start
Meta’s latest consumer AI push is starting to catch the attention of investors, industry watchers, and everyday users. The company recently launched Muse, a new AI app built around the idea of agentic AI, where digital assistants do more than answer questions and can actually complete tasks on a user’s behalf.
Early download data suggests Muse is generating interest, especially on iPhone, but it is not yet matching the explosive debuts of some of Meta’s previous app launches or the early momentum seen by major AI rivals.
New market intelligence data shows that Muse has been downloaded more than 83,000 times on iOS in the United States. For now, the app is only available in the U.S., making the American market the key early test for Meta’s newest AI product.
That level of demand has been enough to push Muse near the top of Apple’s App Store rankings. The app has climbed to the No. 2 spot on the U.S. App Store’s Top Charts, showing that curiosity around Meta’s AI agent is building. Earlier in the week, Muse was ranked No. 4, so the upward movement suggests it may still be gaining momentum.
However, when compared with other major app launches, Muse’s debut looks more modest.
Threads, Meta’s social app, reportedly reached more than 4.3 million downloads in the U.S. on its first day. Meta’s standalone AI app also had a stronger opening, reaching about 108,000 U.S. downloads during its debut. By comparison, Muse needed more time to pass the 83,000-download mark.
The gap becomes even more noticeable when looking at the early performance of ChatGPT. During its initial launch period, ChatGPT surpassed half a million installs in the U.S. in less than a week, despite also being limited to one market at the time. If those downloads were spread evenly, ChatGPT would have averaged roughly 83,300 installs per day, a pace Muse has not yet matched.
Still, a slower start does not necessarily mean Muse is struggling. App launches can grow gradually, especially when a product introduces a new type of behavior that users are still learning to understand. Agentic AI is not as familiar to the average consumer as a chatbot, social feed, or messaging app, so adoption may take more time.
Muse’s performance on Android appears weaker so far. On Google Play, the app has reached only No. 338 in the Productivity category. Android download numbers are not yet available, so it is still too early to judge its full reach across platforms.
Another important factor is that Muse is not limited to mobile app stores. The AI agent is also available through the web and WhatsApp, and those users are not included in the current app download estimates. That means the total number of people testing Muse may be higher than the iOS figure suggests.
Meta is betting big on agentic AI
Muse is more than just another app release for Meta. It represents a major step in the company’s long-term AI strategy.
Meta appears to believe that the next phase of consumer artificial intelligence will be built around agents that can take action for users. Instead of simply asking an AI model to summarize text or generate an image, users may soon expect AI assistants to schedule plans, make purchases, manage communication, organize personal tasks, and coordinate with other services automatically.
That shift could reshape how people interact with technology. If successful, AI agents may become as important as search engines, social networks, or smartphones in everyday digital life.
Meta is not the only company chasing this future. Several major AI players are working on consumer-facing agents designed to perform tasks more independently. Google, Anthropic, and other AI companies are developing tools meant to make assistants more useful, proactive, and personalized.
For now, one of Muse’s most talked-about competitors is Instinct, an AI agent that works through text messages. Instinct has attracted major attention in Silicon Valley and was recently valued at $2.5 billion. It has also raised significant funding, giving it the resources to move quickly and add new features at a rapid pace.
Instinct has recently introduced email addresses for users, integrations with Stripe and 1Password, and a location-sharing feature that allows the agent to perform tasks based on where a user is. The company is also working on a social layer where one person’s AI agent can communicate with another person’s agent to coordinate plans.
That idea could become powerful if AI agents begin forming a new kind of social graph based on real-world relationships and active communication. Meta already has a massive social graph through Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, but an AI-native network based on who people actually coordinate with could become a serious competitive advantage for newer startups.
Privacy concerns may affect Muse’s early growth
One possible challenge for Muse is user trust. AI agents often require access to personal information to be truly useful. They may need to understand calendars, messages, contacts, preferences, locations, emails, payments, and other sensitive data in order to complete tasks effectively.
That creates a major opportunity, but also a major concern.
Muse arrived shortly after Meta agreed to a large multistate settlement related to claims about social media harms. The company has also faced years of scrutiny over data privacy, regulatory investigations, and past controversies involving user information.
For some consumers, that history may make them hesitant to give Meta’s AI agent broader access to personal data. Even if Muse offers useful features, privacy concerns could slow adoption among users who are cautious about how their information is collected, stored, and used.
This issue is not unique to Meta. Every AI agent company will need to convince users that its technology is safe, secure, and worth trusting with sensitive information. But Meta’s scale and history mean it may face a higher level of skepticism than smaller AI startups.
Muse’s early numbers are only the beginning
The first wave of download data paints a mixed picture. Muse is clearly attracting attention on iOS and climbing the App Store charts, but its launch is not yet a breakout on the level of Threads, Meta AI, or ChatGPT. Its Android presence is still limited, and the full impact of its web and WhatsApp availability remains unclear.
The bigger question is not whether Muse can win the launch-week download race. The real test is whether people keep using it.
AI agents will be judged by usefulness, reliability, speed, privacy, and how well they fit into daily life. If Muse can help users complete meaningful tasks with less effort, its early download count may matter less over time. If it feels too limited, too intrusive, or too complicated, early curiosity could fade quickly.
Meta has the advantage of enormous distribution through its existing apps and platforms. It also has the resources to improve Muse quickly, integrate it with more services, and expose it to billions of potential users. But the agentic AI race is moving fast, and competitors are already pushing aggressive new features.
For now, Muse is off to a noticeable but not explosive start. Its rise to the No. 2 spot on the U.S. App Store shows that people are interested. Whether that interest turns into long-term adoption will determine if Muse becomes a major player in consumer AI or simply another experiment in Meta’s expanding artificial intelligence strategy.
