Pokémon Goes Hyper-Real: Meet the Most Lifelike Pikachu Plush Ever Made

The Pokémon Company has just revealed a new must-have collectible for fans who have always wanted a Pikachu that feels as close to “real” as possible: an animatronic Pikachu plush that’s being billed as the most lifelike version of the famous Electric-type mascot to date.

The idea isn’t new—fans have wanted an interactive Pikachu at home for decades. As far back as 1998, an electronic Pikachu plush hit the market with simple but charming features for the time, including moving ears and mouth, light-up cheeks, and voice lines such as the classic “Pika Pika.” Now, The Pokémon Company is pushing that concept much further with a modern animatronic upgrade designed to deliver more expressive movement and more responsive interaction.

The new animatronic Pikachu was unveiled during the Pokémon Europe International Championships in London, where attendees got an early look at how it performs. Unlike standard talking plush toys, this one uses a mix of mechanical components and electronics to recreate Pikachu’s personality with more nuance. It comes with movable ears, animated eyes, and a moving mouth, all operated through controls on its back. The result is somewhat like a hand puppet, but with significantly more precision and a wider range of motion than you’d expect from a typical plush.

What really sets it apart, though, is the variety of reactions. The animatronic Pikachu includes more than 120 different sounds and facial expressions, aiming to make it feel less like a pre-programmed toy and more like a character you can interact with. It also features touch sensors on its face and belly that respond when you pet or tap it, helping the plush react in a more dynamic, natural way.

Pricing has been set at £89.99 (around $123), with international pricing still to be confirmed. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced, The Pokémon Company says it’s planned for later this year. When it launches, it will initially be exclusive to the Pokémon Center online store and will ship with a certificate of authenticity plus a “1st Edition” label—details that clearly position it as a premium collector’s item. It hasn’t appeared in the store yet, but a broader retail release is expected at a later time.

For collectors, longtime Pokémon fans, and anyone who’s ever wanted a highly interactive Pikachu plush, this animatronic edition looks like it could be one of the most attention-grabbing Pokémon releases of the year.
