Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo Gets More Time to Shine

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo Expanded With New Boss Fight, Oni Refuge Area, and Full-Game Reward

Capcom has rolled out an expanded playable demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, giving players a deeper look at the long-awaited return of the classic action series before its global launch on September 4, 2026.

The updated demo is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. This new version goes beyond the original demo ending, adding a fresh area called the Oni Refuge and introducing a massive new boss battle against Daidara.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the first mainline entry in the franchise in roughly 20 years, and Capcom is using the demo to showcase how the series has evolved for modern action-game fans while still keeping its signature samurai-horror identity.

The game is set in a dark fantasy version of early Edo-period Kyoto, where demonic Genma have overrun the city. Players step into the role of a young Miyamoto Musashi, whose appearance is inspired by legendary actor Toshiro Mifune. Armed with the mysterious Oni Gauntlet, Musashi must battle supernatural enemies, master precise sword techniques, and survive a brutal world filled with danger.

The original demo ended at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, where Musashi faced his rival, Sasaki Ganryu, in a tense duel built around timing, defense, parries, and stance control. Rather than encouraging simple button mashing, the fight pushed players to learn the rhythm of combat and strike only when the moment was right.

In the expanded demo, defeating Ganryu no longer brings the experience to a close. Instead, a new cutscene carries Musashi into the Oni Refuge, a strange and atmospheric location filled with fresh Genma threats and new gameplay challenges. This area also introduces the Oni Bow, a puzzle-solving tool that adds more variety beyond sword combat.

The updated demo now concludes with a dramatic showdown against Daidara, a towering boss designed to test everything players have learned so far. With its larger scale and more demanding combat flow, the Daidara encounter offers a stronger preview of the full game’s action and boss design.

Capcom’s new approach to Onimusha combat blends classic mechanics with modern action systems. One of the key features is Break Issen, a reworked version of the series’ famous one-hit kill technique. Instead of relying entirely on frame-perfect timing, players can now trigger Break Issen after fully depleting an enemy’s stamina gauge, making the mechanic more accessible while still rewarding skillful play.

The demo also highlights dual-stance swordplay, defensive counters, and soul absorption. Absorbing souls during combat powers Musashi’s Oni Armaments, giving players more tactical options during difficult encounters. This creates a combat loop that feels fast, deliberate, and deeply connected to the franchise’s roots.

Players who complete the demo and keep their save data will receive a bonus in the full game. The reward is the Kubi Akari charm, an equippable item that boosts Musashi’s stats. However, progress made in the demo itself will not transfer to the final release, so players will start fresh when the full game arrives.

Capcom has also noted that demo performance may not fully represent the finished version. A separate PC benchmark tool is planned, allowing players to check how well Onimusha: Way of the Sword will run on their systems before launch.

According to director Satoru Nihei, the development team rebuilt the world of Onimusha so that new players can jump in without needing to know the previous games. At the same time, the team paid close attention to historical and architectural detail. Capcom worked with the city of Kyoto to recreate Kiyomizu-dera Temple with impressive accuracy, including details such as the real number of pillars.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches worldwide on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The expanded demo is available now on all supported platforms, giving both longtime fans and newcomers a strong taste of Capcom’s revived samurai action series.
