China Calls for Practical Growth as Humanoid Robotics Boom Accelerates
China’s fast-growing humanoid robotics industry is being urged to slow down the hype and focus on real-world value. As investment, public attention, and competition surge across the sector, the country’s National Development and Reform Commission has warned that robotics development should be guided by practical use cases, long-term sustainability, and local industrial strengths.
At a press conference held on August 28, NDRC spokesperson Chao Li emphasized that the future of China’s robotics sector should not be shaped by blind enthusiasm or speculative trends. Instead, local governments, manufacturers, and technology companies were encouraged to take a more measured approach, building robotics projects around genuine market demand and the resources already available in each region.
The message comes at a time when humanoid robots are becoming one of the most closely watched areas in advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence. Across China, companies are racing to develop robots capable of walking, carrying objects, assisting in factories, supporting service industries, and eventually helping in homes, healthcare, logistics, and public services.
However, officials appear concerned that the rapid expansion of the humanoid robot market could lead to duplicated projects, wasted investment, and unrealistic expectations. The NDRC’s latest remarks suggest that China wants to avoid a bubble-like rush and instead create a robotics ecosystem that can deliver commercial results.
Chao Li called for development based on “local resource endowments” and existing industrial advantages. In practice, this means regions should not launch robotics programs simply because the sector is popular. Areas with strong manufacturing bases may be better positioned to focus on industrial robots, while cities with advanced research institutions may play a larger role in robotics software, artificial intelligence, sensors, or motion control technologies.
This approach could help China’s humanoid robotics industry mature more efficiently. Rather than encouraging every region to chase the same opportunities, the government is signaling that specialization, coordination, and practical deployment should become the foundation of future growth.
The warning also highlights a broader challenge facing the global robotics market. While humanoid robots attract major attention because of their futuristic design and potential versatility, turning prototypes into reliable, affordable, and scalable products remains difficult. Companies must solve complex issues involving battery life, mobility, safety, cost control, AI decision-making, and real-world durability.
For China, the stakes are high. The country has already become a major player in industrial automation, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. Humanoid robotics is seen as a possible next-generation growth engine, especially as businesses search for ways to improve productivity and address labor shortages.
Still, the NDRC’s comments make clear that government support will likely favor projects with practical applications rather than flashy demonstrations. Robots that can improve factory efficiency, support elderly care, assist with logistics, or perform dangerous tasks may receive more attention than concepts with limited commercial value.
