Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date may have leaked for September 2026
Capcom’s long-awaited return to the Onimusha series may finally have a specific release date. After years of silence around the classic supernatural samurai franchise, Onimusha: Way of the Sword was officially announced in December 2024, with Capcom confirming a 2026 launch window. Now, a new leak suggests the game could arrive on September 25, 2026.
The rumored date comes from insider Asdf/intercelluar, a source who has recently shared details on several unannounced or unreleased gaming projects. According to the latest claim, Capcom is currently targeting late September for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. However, the insider also warned that the information “might be outdated,” meaning the date may have shifted internally or could still change before an official announcement.
Capcom first revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword during The Game Awards 2024, instantly catching the attention of longtime fans who have been waiting for the franchise to return. In April, the publisher reassured players that the game was still on track for 2026, calming concerns that the project might slip into a later year.
If the September 25 release date is accurate, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be launching during a very crowded period for major games. September 2026 is already expected to be packed with high-profile releases, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Phantom Blade Zero, and Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. That kind of competition could make timing crucial for Capcom.
Delaying the game too far may also be risky. Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to dominate attention and sales in November 2026, making that month a difficult window for other big releases. The industry is already reacting to Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster, with Microsoft moving its Fable reboot to February 2027, reportedly in part to avoid the massive impact of GTA 6.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is currently planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has not been officially confirmed. However, Capcom has shown strong support for Nintendo’s new hardware with titles such as Resident Evil: Requiem and Pragmata, and the RE Engine has proven capable on the platform. Because of that, many fans believe a Switch 2 port could eventually happen.
The new Onimusha game is expected to follow Musashi Miyamoto, bringing players back into a dark world of sword combat, demonic enemies, and supernatural action. The first trailer presented the game as a third-person action experience with a cinematic style, blending the franchise’s classic samurai atmosphere with modern visuals and combat design.
If Capcom is truly aiming for a September 2026 launch, more gameplay footage could arrive soon. Several major gaming showcases are scheduled for June, including Sony’s State of Play on June 2, Summer Game Fest on June 5, and the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8. Any of these events could be a fitting stage for Capcom to reveal a new trailer, confirm the release date, and provide a deeper look at combat, story, and platform details.
For now, the September 25 date should be treated as a rumor until Capcom makes an official announcement. Still, the leak has renewed excitement around Onimusha: Way of the Sword and suggests that the franchise’s comeback may be closer than fans expected. If the date holds, 2026 could mark the return of one of Capcom’s most memorable action series.
