Mario Kart Tour Unveils Exciting Update Honoring the Global Legacy of Mario Kart

Nintendo is bringing new excitement to the mobile gaming scene with a fresh content update for Mario Kart Tour, marking the first since 2023. This unexpected revival, titled “Mario Kart World Special Campaign,” is set to launch on July 22 alongside the Sunshine Tour, running until August 6, followed by Vacation and Summer Tours, each lasting two weeks.

This update introduces Famicom-inspired outfits for beloved characters Mario and Luigi, along with four custom Tiny Titan Kart resprays from Mario Kart World. Fans will also be thrilled to race on the Piranha Plant Pipeline track, exclusive to the mobile game.

Back in September 2023, Nintendo and developer DeNA had announced they would halt new content updates for Mario Kart Tour, leading many to believe the game was nearing its end. However, the latest update, surprisingly announced on July 18, coincides with the launch of Mario Kart World on the Nintendo Switch 2, breathing new life into the beloved mobile title.

Since its launch in September 2019, Mario Kart Tour has captured the hearts of mobile gamers, boasting 230 million downloads worldwide and becoming Nintendo’s second-highest-grossing mobile game, generating $243 million by 2023.

On the other hand, Mario Kart World, launched on June 5, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch 2, has already achieved impressive sales, with over 1.3 million copies sold in Japan and 869,000 in the U.S.

Despite the excitement this update brings, there remains some skepticism regarding the future of Nintendo’s mobile ventures, especially with the discontinuation of several major titles like Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Nevertheless, the Mario Kart World Special Campaign Tour signifies Nintendo’s continuing interest in the mobile gaming landscape, even as it emphasizes the Nintendo Switch 2 as its primary platform.
