Leonard Boyarsky on Microsoft’s Acquisition: “A Surprising Turn for Outer Wilds 2 Devs”

In a twist worthy of its own narrative, the creators of The Outer Wilds found themselves under new ownership by a major corporation, just as they were developing a game that humorously critiques corporate dominance. Leonard Boyarsky, co-creator of The Outer Wilds, recently discussed this unexpected development in an interview, revealing it as quite a shock when Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment in 2018, bringing Obsidian and its associated studios under Xbox Game Studios.

Despite concerns, Boyarsky assured fans that this corporate shift did not stifle their creative vision. According to him, Microsoft’s involvement has had no impact on Obsidian’s creative freedom, allowing the team to craft a game centered on themes of corporate greed and sponsorship dynamics reminiscent of real-world mega corporations. Boyarsky emphasized that these themes explore timeless human issues, stating, “Unfortunately, power corrupting people has always been a challenge for humanity and likely won’t change soon.”

Co-director Tim Cain echoed these sentiments, noting that Microsoft’s acquisition provided stability without creative interference. This stability has enabled Obsidian Entertainment to expand significantly, growing from 200 employees in 2018 to over 300 by 2025.

Looking ahead, this ironic chapter has inspired a grander vision for their next project. The Outer Wilds 2, announced at E3 2021, is set to release on October 29, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. Boyarsky promises a more expansive experience, with plans to explore new planets and factions, building upon the foundation laid by the first game.

For those eager to dive in, The Outer Wilds 2 Premium Edition, priced at $99.99, offers five days of early access and a DLC pass for future expansions. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will enjoy day-one access, ensuring fans can explore the universe as soon as the game launches.
