Intel’s Next Handheld Gaming Chip Could Bring Steam Deck Rivals Down to 8W
A new wave of affordable gaming handhelds may be on the way, and Intel could play a major role in making them cheaper, cooler, and more battery-friendly. Fresh details suggest that Intel is preparing a new Panther Lake-based processor aimed at portable gaming devices, with power consumption reportedly starting at just 8 watts.
That matters because battery life remains one of the biggest challenges for handheld gaming PCs. While current high-performance chips can deliver impressive frame rates, they often need more power, create more heat, and require larger batteries or stronger cooling systems. A more efficient Intel chip could help manufacturers build lighter, quieter, and more affordable handheld consoles.
Intel already has powerful options in its Arc G3 lineup, including chips with many CPU cores and stronger integrated graphics. These processors can outperform the custom AMD chip inside the Steam Deck in certain scenarios, but they also tend to cost more and draw more power. Some models can operate between 8 and 30 watts, while the Steam Deck’s Ryzen-based chip can go as low as 5 watts, giving Valve’s handheld an advantage in efficiency.

Less demanding games, indie titles, emulators, and retro releases could potentially run with improved battery life while keeping the device cool and quiet.
Performance will likely be lower than Intel’s more powerful Arc G3 chips, especially because this rumored model is said to include far fewer graphics processing units. However, that may be exactly the point. A reduced GPU configuration should help lower production costs and make the chip more suitable for budget gaming handhelds.
This could open the door for a new class of portable gaming PCs aimed at players who do not need top-tier graphics performance. Many gamers mainly use handhelds for indie games, older PC titles, cloud gaming, and retro emulation. For those use cases, a cheaper and more efficient chip may be more appealing than a premium processor that drains the battery faster.
