The upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is set to launch soon, with new information continuously emerging, particularly regarding the camera hardware of the ‘Pro’ models. In the previous generation, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max included a tetraprism camera capable of 5x optical zoom, leaving the smaller ‘Pro’ model without this feature. Recently, reports suggest that both iPhone 16 Pro models will now include the tetraprism lens from the same supplier.
iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature 5x optical zoom, just like the larger ‘Pro Max,’ thanks to their larger chassis. According to reports, LG Innotek will be the exclusive provider of the tetraprism lens for these ‘Pro’ models, likely to be launched on September 20th, following an announcement on September 10th. The tetraprism lens works with a folded glass structure positioned underneath the actual lens, enabling enhanced optical zoom by reflecting light four times, which allows for longer focal lengths of 120mm and 5x optical zoom without losing quality.
This update means that both iPhone 16 Pro variants will offer superior zoom capabilities without compromising image or video quality, unlike the previous year when this feature was exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, whether the iPhone 16 Pro Max will offer even higher optical zoom than the iPhone 16 Pro remains uncertain.
Additionally, Apple employs 3D sensor-shift technology for improved stabilization, a feature previously exclusive to the larger Pro Max due to its more spacious interior. With the iPhone 16 Pro model increasing in size, it is speculated that this model will also adopt the sensor-shift technology.
For now, LG Innotek is set to be the sole provider of the new tetraprism lens for the ‘Pro’ models. When the initial supplies are exhausted, Apple may turn to Foxconn and Cowell for additional folded lens technology. Sharp has been excluded from the list of lens suppliers this year but may return in the future. Apple is also expected to announce the iPhone 16 lineup alongside other products like the Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4 in the upcoming event.
