Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry raises an interesting point about the newly announced PS5 Pro. In a conversation with IGN, he suggested that despite the PS5 Pro’s upgraded GPU, the console may struggle to deliver GTA 6 at 60 FPS, particularly if the base PS5 aims for 30 FPS. The primary reason for this, according to Richard, is that both the PS5 and PS5 Pro share the same CPU.
Sony recently unveiled the PS5 Pro, marking it as their priciest console to date. This new variant boasts notable improvements, especially in the GPU department. Yet, the CPU remains unchanged from the standard PS5. Richard pointed out that while the enhanced GPU in the PS5 Pro shows promise, the unchanged CPU could bottleneck performance for demanding games like GTA 6.
Richard elaborates that games in the GTA series involve extensive simulation work that runs simultaneously. GTA 6, in particular, is rumored to be offering one of the most lifelike city experiences in gaming history, which demands significant CPU power. Therefore, while the GPU enhancements are welcome, the CPU will still bear the brunt of the simulation load, potentially restraining the game from hitting 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro if the base PS5 is set for 30 FPS.
Even though the PS5 Pro’s GPU has 67% more Compute Units than the base model and the CPU clocks are 10% faster, these upgrades might only ensure a stable performance rather than an actual FPS increase in resource-heavy games like GTA 6. Richard mentioned that unless Rockstar targets 60 FPS for the regular PS5, which appears unlikely at this point, achieving this frame rate on the PS5 Pro could be challenging.
Historically, every GTA game launched on consoles has targeted 30 FPS, but with a release slated for Fall 2025, it’s still too early to definitively assess the performance metrics for GTA 6 on the new console.
