Leak Suggests Rockstar May Drop GTA 6 Online Just One Month After Launch

Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster is already generating intense buzz, and a new leak suggests fans may not have to wait long to jump into multiplayer. According to the latest chatter, GTA 6 Online could arrive as soon as December—potentially just a month after GTA 6 launches.

Right now, the biggest hope among players is simple: that the GTA 6 release date doesn’t slip again. Even so, most expect Rockstar to roll out major updates and content drops well beyond the initial launch window. A well-known Call of Duty leaker, TheGhostOfHope, claims Rockstar may be putting extra emphasis on multiplayer and that GTA 6 Online is being lined up for a rapid post-launch debut.

A December GTA 6 Online launch wouldn’t be out of character

Even though Rockstar hasn’t officially explained how GTA 6’s online functionality will work, the idea of a quick multiplayer rollout fits the company’s track record. GTA 5 launched first as a largely single-player experience, then GTA Online followed shortly after on October 1, 2013—just weeks later. That early GTA Online period had its share of technical headaches, and some fans still remember the rocky start, but the timing set a clear precedent.

Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern. Its online mode entered a multiplayer beta about a month after release, reinforcing the idea that Rockstar likes to get the online ecosystem running soon after the main game hits shelves.

What this could mean for the future of GTA Online

Even if GTA 6 Online arrives quickly, it doesn’t necessarily mean the current GTA Online disappears overnight. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has indicated the existing service could continue for a long time. The newer title is expected to offer its own separate multiplayer experience, which may gradually grow into the primary platform over time.

In other words, GTA 6 Online may be positioned as the next evolution of Rockstar’s multiplayer formula—but the current GTA Online could remain active while the new one establishes its player base and content cadence.

Potential GTA 6 Online features: bigger lobbies and more creative freedom

One of the more interesting clues about GTA 6 Online reportedly surfaced during a legal dispute involving former Rockstar employees. As part of the proceedings, a Discord message was referenced that mentioned playtests with 32 users. That number stands out, but it’s also not a massive jump from GTA 5’s player counts, which already support 30 players in many online sessions. If true, it suggests Rockstar is at least exploring slightly expanded lobbies for GTA 6 Online.

Other GTA 6 leaks point toward Rockstar sticking with a live-service approach again, meaning ongoing updates, rotating events, and regular new content designed to keep players engaged for years. There are also rumors that GTA 6 Online could loosen restrictions on user-created content compared to what players are used to. While GTA Online has tools for creativity, much of its biggest content is driven by officially approved updates and major in-game events.

Some fans also believe Rockstar’s acquisition of FiveM may influence the next era of online play, potentially making the company more open to certain types of mods and community-driven experiences than it has been in the past.

Microtransactions are likely, but may not slow momentum

It’s also widely expected that GTA 6 Online will include monetized content and downloads, following the model that helped GTA Online become one of the most profitable entertainment products ever. Still, with massive sales forecasts surrounding GTA 6, many believe microtransactions won’t stop players from diving in—especially if the base experience is strong and the online world evolves with compelling updates.

For now, nothing is confirmed by Rockstar. But if the leak is accurate and GTA 6 launches on schedule, a December GTA 6 Online release could be a very realistic next step in the studio’s familiar rollout strategy.
