GTA 6 Xbox fans worry PlayStation marketing is making the game look like a PS5 exclusive
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be one of the biggest game launches in years, and it will not be limited to one console. Rockstar Games’ next open-world crime blockbuster is planned as a multi-platform release, including Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Still, some Xbox fans believe the early marketing push is making GTA 6 look far more closely tied to Sony’s console.
The concern comes as pre-order promotions begin to build momentum. PlayStation has been highly visible in promoting GTA 6, with messaging that positions the PS5 as the best place to experience the game. For casual buyers who do not follow every announcement, that kind of advertising could easily create the impression that GTA 6 is a PlayStation exclusive, even though it is also coming to Xbox.
Xbox fans question Microsoft’s quiet approach
Many players are asking why Microsoft has not responded with a stronger GTA 6 Xbox marketing campaign. While the game has appeared on the Xbox storefront and received some social media attention, fans argue that the effort feels limited compared with PlayStation’s more coordinated promotional push.
Industry commentator Jez Corden has described Microsoft’s handling of the situation as a missed opportunity, suggesting that the company should be doing more to prepare for one of the most important game releases of the generation. With GTA 6 expected to drive console sales, subscriptions, accessories, and digital spending, many Xbox supporters feel Microsoft cannot afford to stay quiet.
The frustration grew ahead of the June 25 pre-order launch, when PlayStation messaging highlighted that GTA 6 “plays best on PS5.” Rockstar has not yet confirmed every technical detail, including whether the game will offer a 60 fps performance mode on console. However, the PS5 version is expected to support features such as DualSense controller feedback and fast SSD loading.
Why PlayStation may be leading the marketing
One possible reason for the PlayStation-heavy promotion is a marketing agreement between Take-Two, Rockstar Games, and Sony. GTA 6 is not a PS5 exclusive, but major promotional material has been closely associated with Sony’s hardware. The second trailer was captured on PlayStation 5, adding to the perception that Sony has secured a major marketing advantage.
There have also been rumors that a GTA 6 PS5 or PS5 Pro bundle could arrive around launch. If that happens, Sony could use the game as a major system seller, especially among players who have waited to upgrade from older consoles.
From a business perspective, Sony’s aggressive approach is not surprising. The PlayStation 5 has a large global install base, and GTA 6 will almost certainly be one of the most searched, watched, and purchased games of its launch year. Tying the PS5 brand closely to the game could strengthen Sony’s position even further.
Xbox faces a tougher hardware situation
The timing is especially difficult for Microsoft because the Xbox business is already dealing with hardware challenges. Rising memory costs and component shortages have affected the broader gaming industry, with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all facing pressure from increased manufacturing expenses.
According to industry discussion, Xbox may be more exposed to these supply issues than its competitors. Limited access to DRAM and storage components may have contributed to recent price increases for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. If GTA 6 causes a major rush in demand, Xbox could struggle to keep enough systems available at retail.
That is where the marketing concern becomes even more serious. If Xbox fans want to buy a console for GTA 6 but stock is limited or prices are higher, some may choose a PS5 instead, especially if PlayStation advertising continues to dominate the conversation.
GTA 6 could widen the console sales gap
GTA 6 is more than just another major release. It has the potential to shape console sales for years. A game of this scale can influence where new players enter the current generation, and that makes visibility extremely important.
Even though GTA 6 is coming to Xbox, the current promotional landscape appears to favor PlayStation. If Microsoft does not strengthen its messaging, some fans worry that the company could lose a valuable chance to remind players that GTA 6 Xbox Series X|S versions are also part of the launch.
For now, the game remains a multi-platform release, not a PS5 exclusive. But in the battle for public attention, perception can be powerful. Sony is making sure players associate GTA 6 with PlayStation, while Xbox fans are still waiting for Microsoft to make a louder statement of its own.
