Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ event unveiled a dazzling array of hardware, including two new AirPods 4 models that feature the option for Active Noise Cancellation. These latest wireless earbuds come equipped with Apple’s cutting-edge H2 chip and are offered at a significantly more affordable price point. Naturally, one might expect the upcoming AirPods Max to also boast the latest hardware. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Instead, these premium wireless headphones will be powered by a chip that’s now four years old, leaving many to ponder if they are more of a fashion accessory than a truly high-end audio product.
Despite the transition from Lightning to USB-C, the new AirPods Max lineup is likely to be overshadowed by the popularity of the AirPods 4. In comparing the specifications, the standout difference is the inclusion of the H2 chip in the AirPods 4. While some might think the H2 is just a marginal upgrade over the H1, it brings numerous advantages worth noting. To start, the H2 delivers superior Active Noise Cancellation, with Apple claiming it can cancel out twice the noise compared to the H1, resulting in richer bass and clearer sound.
Additionally, the H2 chip supports Adaptive Transparency Mode. This feature uses on-device processing to reduce unwanted loud noise sources, allowing you to hear better without completely canceling out the sound. Unfortunately, the AirPods Max won’t offer these benefits since they are equipped with the older H1 chip. The primary appeal of the AirPods Max remains their large earcups, which help to muffle background noise.
On a brighter note, the shift from Lightning to USB-C is a welcome change, eliminating the need to juggle multiple cables. However, priced at $549, the AirPods Max clearly target affluent consumers. There are better options available within Apple’s lineup, but the AirPods Max remain the sole over-ear headphones offered by the company. If you’re specifically looking for over-ear headphones with the Apple logo and wireless earbuds don’t pique your interest, there are no alternatives at the moment.
For those who are indifferent about the USB-C upgrade, opting for an older model of the AirPods Max could be a wise choice. For instance, the Pink variant is currently priced at $429 on Amazon, representing the lowest price among the previous color options. Alternatively, if the high cost of the AirPods Max is a concern, the new AirPods 4 starting at $129.99 offer an attractive option, featuring Apple’s latest H2 chip. Happy listening!
