GTA 6 Pre-Orders on PS5 Reportedly Crush Xbox 6-to-1 as Console Price Hikes Near

GTA 6 Pre-Orders Reportedly Favor PS5 by a Huge Margin Over Xbox

Early GTA 6 pre-order data suggests PlayStation may be taking a commanding lead over Xbox ahead of Rockstar’s highly anticipated open-world blockbuster. According to initial retail tracking, PS5 copies of GTA 6 are reportedly outselling Xbox Series X|S versions by around six to one, a gap that appears even larger than the current difference between PlayStation and Xbox console ownership.

The result is not entirely unexpected. Sony’s PS5 has a significantly larger install base than Microsoft’s current-generation consoles. As of March 31, 2026, Sony reported 93.7 million PS5 consoles sold worldwide. Microsoft has not shared official updated sales figures for Xbox Series X|S, but market estimates place the combined total at roughly 34.7 million units. That means PS5 consoles outnumber Xbox Series X|S systems by about 2.7 to one.

However, the reported GTA 6 pre-order difference is much wider than the hardware sales gap alone would suggest. This points to more than just the size of the console audience. Marketing, pricing, consumer perception, and console availability all appear to be playing major roles.

One of the biggest advantages for Sony is the way GTA 6 is being positioned in the market. Although the game is expected to launch on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation’s promotional messaging has made the PS5 version feel especially prominent. Marketing around features such as DualSense haptic feedback and Tempest 3D Audio has helped reinforce the idea that GTA 6 may deliver its most immersive console experience on PS5.

That message could be influencing casual buyers, especially those who do not closely follow platform details. For some players, the heavy PlayStation presence in GTA 6 advertising may create the impression that the game is closely tied to Sony’s console, even if it is not a true exclusive.

Xbox, meanwhile, appears to be facing a tougher battle. Microsoft’s marketing push for GTA 6 has been quieter so far, and that lack of visibility may be hurting pre-order momentum. In a release cycle as massive as GTA 6, public perception matters. If one console is seen as the “main” place to play the game, many buyers may naturally gravitate toward that platform.

Pricing could also become a major factor. Another Xbox Series X|S price increase is expected to take effect on August 1, which may make it harder for Microsoft to attract new console buyers before GTA 6 arrives. Rockstar’s next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is expected to be one of the rare games powerful enough to convince people to buy new hardware, including casual players who may not already own a current-generation console.

If Xbox hardware becomes more expensive at the same time demand for GTA 6 rises, some potential buyers may choose PS5 instead, especially if Sony can avoid another price hike during the crucial months leading into the holiday season.

Sony is not completely free from pricing pressure either. Ongoing memory shortages have affected the cost of PS5 models, including the PS5 Pro. Still, PlayStation may be in a stronger position if it can maintain competitive pricing and consistent supply during the final stretch before GTA 6 launches.

Console availability will be another key issue. Demand for GTA 6 is expected to be enormous, and retailers may see a rush of shoppers looking to purchase new systems specifically for the game. Even if Sony benefits from stronger pre-order demand, limited PS5 stock could prevent the company from fully capitalizing on the opportunity. Reports suggest some retailers are already preparing for the possibility that GTA 6 demand could strain hardware supplies.

For Microsoft, the challenge is even more complicated. If component shortages limit Xbox production while prices rise and marketing remains subdued, the Series X|S could struggle to gain ground during one of the most important gaming launches of the generation.

At this stage, PS5 appears set to dominate GTA 6 console sales, at least based on early pre-order trends. The PlayStation advantage is supported by a larger player base, stronger brand association with the game, and more visible marketing. Xbox will still have a major audience for GTA 6, but current signs suggest it may fall far behind Sony in both software sales and potential console momentum.

GTA 6 is more than just another major release. It is likely to become a defining entertainment event, capable of shaping console sales, subscription interest, and platform loyalty for years. If early pre-order numbers hold, Sony could enter the GTA 6 launch window with a major advantage, while Microsoft may need a much stronger marketing push to close the gap.
