As tech advancements in AI and the growing market for foldable phones surge, Apple is poised to face challenges in 2024 that could potentially lead to a dip in iPhone sales. There are indications that the tech giant has curtailed its shipment forecasts for key iPhone components by roughly 200 million units as it anticipates a decrease in demand.
Analyst insights suggest that iPhone shipments could see a decline of about 15% in 2024. These projections are reinforced by a notable reduction of 30% to 40% in weekly iPhone shipments in China—a critical market for Apple.
One major factor that could drive this downturn is the competition Apple faces from Samsung’s latest technologies. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series is pioneering new AI-driven features that currently do not have equivalents in Apple’s offerings. As the iPhone 16 series, to be released later this year, looms on the horizon, it remains uncertain whether it will include similar advancements in AI technology to rival Samsung’s innovations.
The Galaxy S24 has not only topped pre-order records across several markets, but Samsung is also projecting an increase in sales of its Galaxy S flagships by 5-10% in comparison to the previous year. Plans are also underway for Samsung to introduce a new lineup of flagship phones in the latter half of 2024, which will reportedly incorporate the company’s sophisticated AI tools.
Moreover, customer interest in foldable phones, a trend driven largely by Samsung’s innovative display and mobile divisions, is on the rise. Many mobile manufacturers are now exploring the foldable phone landscape. Despite this trend, Apple has not yet indicated any move towards developing a foldable iPhone, potentially leaving them behind in this segment.
With Samsung’s momentum seeming to grow in the AI and foldable tech arenas, Apple might be confronted with an increasing challenge to its market share, especially if consumer interest continues to shift towards devices boasting cutting-edge technologies and new form factors.
