DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Teaser Suggests a Cinematic iPhone 17 Pro–Style Upgrade Ahead of Launch

DJI is getting ready to unveil the Osmo Pocket 4 on April 16, and early teasers are already fueling speculation about what could be the biggest upgrade yet for the ultra-compact gimbal camera. After the runaway popularity of the Osmo Pocket 3, expectations are high—and DJI’s own messaging suggests this next model may be built with creators and social-first video workflows in mind.

One teaser slogan in particular is turning heads: “A world that expands.” It’s short, but it hints at a meaningful change to how the Osmo Pocket 4 might capture video. There are two standout possibilities.

The first is a wider native lens. The current Osmo Pocket 3’s field of view is roughly equivalent to 20mm, which works well for general shooting but can feel tight for vlogging, travel videos, group shots, and indoor filming. A wider built-in focal length could make the Pocket 4 more versatile straight out of the box and reduce the need for add-ons like a magnetic wide-angle adapter.

The second possibility is even more exciting for serious creators: Open Gate recording. Open Gate is a mode that captures the full camera sensor area—typically in a 4:3 or 3:2 shape—instead of cropping down to a standard 16:9 frame. That extra image area matters a lot in real-world editing, because it gives you more room at the top and bottom of the frame to reframe later.

For anyone who shoots horizontal video and then needs to repurpose it for vertical platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts, Open Gate can be a game-changer. Instead of losing quality when cropping into a vertical 9:16 format, creators get more “headroom” to adjust framing while keeping their footage sharper and more usable. In other words, one clip can more easily become multiple deliverables without reshooting.

Open Gate has recently gained new attention after appearing in the iPhone 17 Pro conversation through pro-focused camera apps, and it reflects a broader trend: both phones and pocket cameras are steadily adopting filmmaking-style tools that also happen to perfectly fit influencer and content creator needs. If DJI brings Open Gate to the Osmo Pocket 4, it would signal a clear push toward more professional flexibility in a genuinely portable camera.

With the April 16 launch date now locked in, more official details should arrive soon. Until then, the “world that expands” tease is a strong hint that the Osmo Pocket 4 could deliver either a wider perspective, smarter sensor use, or possibly both—exactly the kind of upgrades that could make it a standout in the creator camera space this year.
