Bridging Intel’s Socket Split: Battle-AX Motherboards Bring Color and Value in the DDR5 Cost Crunch

Colorful is expanding its Battle-AX lineup with two new budget-friendly motherboards built for Intel users on both current and previous platforms. The company is targeting value-focused PC builders who want modern connectivity and next-gen expansion options without paying premium motherboard prices. The two new models are the Battle-AX B860M-Plus S WiFi 7 for Intel’s latest LGA 1851 processors, and the Battle-AX B760M-Plus S WiFi 7 for the widely used LGA 1700 platform.

The Battle-AX B760M-Plus S WiFi 7 is a micro-ATX motherboard designed for Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake and 13th/14th Gen Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs. One of its biggest advantages for budget builds is DDR4 support, which can help significantly reduce overall system cost, especially when DDR5 pricing trends upward. Even while sticking to DDR4, Colorful is still bringing a major modern upgrade to this platform with WiFi 7, offering better bandwidth and improved wireless performance for users who prefer cable-free networking.

Despite being positioned as an affordable board, the B760M-Plus S doesn’t skimp on GPU readiness. It includes a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, aimed at supporting today’s high-end graphics cards and newer generations of GPUs. Storage support is also solid for a compact build, with three M.2 PCIe 4.0 slots plus four SATA ports for additional drives. Memory capacity tops out at 128 GB of DDR4, with support for speeds up to 4800 MHz.

For builders shifting to Intel’s newest platform, the Battle-AX B860M-Plus S WiFi 7 focuses on next-gen features at a competitive price point. Built on the B860 chipset, it supports DDR5 memory with capacities up to 192 GB and memory speeds reaching 8800 MT/s, giving it much more headroom for performance-focused workloads and future upgrades.

The B860M-Plus S also leans harder into PCIe Gen 5.0. In addition to a PCIe 5.0 interface for the GPU slot, it includes PCIe 5.0 support for the primary M.2 slot, and it adds two more M.2 slots that also use a PCIe Gen 5.0 interface. On the connectivity side, it matches the newer wireless standard with WiFi 7, includes Bluetooth 5.4, and adds a faster 5G LAN option for users who want high-speed wired networking.

These two Colorful Battle-AX motherboards are clearly aimed at practical builders: the B760M-Plus S WiFi 7 appeals to anyone who wants a cost-effective Intel 12th/13th/14th Gen system while staying on DDR4, and the B860M-Plus S WiFi 7 targets users adopting Intel’s latest processors and the DDR5 ecosystem while still keeping the build affordable.

Colorful hasn’t announced official pricing or availability yet, but more details are expected soon.
