Apple is on a mission to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm by developing its own custom 5G modems. While the tech giant hasn’t specified exactly when this switch will happen, signs point to these in-house modems making their debut as early as next year.
According to trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s homegrown 5G modems are expected to start rolling out in iPhones starting next year. Earlier reports suggested that the iPhone SE 4, rumored to launch in the first half of the year, would be the first to feature these custom modems. This suggests that Apple has likely overcome the significant technical challenges involved. Kuo estimates that Apple will ship between 35 to 40 million units of its custom 5G modems in the inaugural year.
Looking further ahead, shipments could skyrocket, with estimates suggesting 90 to 110 million units by 2026 and an astonishing 160 to 180 million units by 2027. Based on past reports, Kuo believes that Apple will introduce two new iPhone models next year with these custom modems. Besides the iPhone SE 4, the other model may belong to the iPhone 17 series, with a strong possibility of it being the iPhone 17 ‘Air.’ This model is anticipated to launch in the third quarter alongside the broader iPhone 17 lineup in September.
Currently, Apple relies on Qualcomm for its 5G modems, much like it once depended on Intel before transitioning to its own custom Silicon. The partnership with Qualcomm is secured for modems until at least 2026, giving Apple a few more years to fully complete its transition to custom-designed 5G solutions.
Apple’s journey to creating its own 5G modem began in earnest in 2019 after acquiring a substantial part of Intel’s modem division. Building a top-tier modem involves massive investment in research and development. Though initial reports indicate that Apple’s 5G modem might lag behind Qualcomm’s in terms of speed, it could offer unique features that give it an edge. One significant advantage is the possibility of integrating the modem directly into the System on Chip (SoC), potentially saving valuable space inside the iPhone.
With the tech world eagerly watching, more details about Apple’s custom 5G modems are expected to emerge soon. In the meantime, the company is gearing up to unveil its latest iPhone 16 lineup on Monday, so stay tuned for comprehensive coverage.
