Apple hinted that the M3 Ultra might be the end of the line for its Mac Studio upgrade plans, suggesting an M4 Ultra wasn’t on their immediate radar. However, recent findings in internal code suggest otherwise. It appears Apple is still secretly developing its next-generation Apple Silicon, potentially aimed at enhancing its most powerful and pricey computer, the Mac Pro.
The rumored M4 Ultra could boast a unique design with a single, monolithic die and is reportedly codenamed ‘Hidra.’ While the absence of an M4 Ultra launch following the M3 Ultra suggested a possible halt in development, clues found in company code indicate that work is still underway.
Industry expert Mark Gurman previously noted that production challenges might be hindering the M4 Ultra’s launch, which is why the M3 Ultra is currently the star of the Mac Studio. The identifier ‘t8152’ is associated with the M4 Ultra, reinforcing ongoing efforts despite potential hurdles.
Historically, when Apple introduced the M2 Ultra, the financial leap between Mac Studio and Mac Pro models was significant—around $3,000. This price gap reflects the premium nature of these machines, akin to high-end MacBook Pros. If Apple deems the M4 Ultra financially unviable, its development might remain stalled. Additionally, the absence of an UltraFusion connector in the M4 Max signifies potential strategic shifts, suggesting that if the M4 Ultra enters the scene, it could be a complex and costly endeavor.
The future of the M4 Ultra remains uncertain, resting on Apple’s decision to move forward with unveiling this powerful chipset. Until then, tech enthusiasts and industry watchers will be eager to see if the rumored ‘Hidra’ will make its grand debut.
