Apple’s Mac Studio could be heading for a notable evolution over the next few years, but users hoping for a big design or cooling upgrade may need to wait. The latest reports suggest Apple is already working on two future Mac Studio generations, with the more significant hardware changes expected to arrive with the Apple M7 Ultra model in 2028.
The current Mac Studio has recently drawn attention for an unexpected change: its maximum memory configuration has reportedly been reduced from 512 GB to 96 GB on the model with Apple M3 Ultra. That is a major shift for Apple’s high-end compact desktop, especially since the Mac Studio is aimed at creative professionals, developers, video editors, 3D artists, and users who rely on heavy multitasking and demanding workflows.
Despite that downgrade, Apple’s long-term desktop plans appear to be moving forward. The next Mac Studio is expected to feature the Apple M5 Ultra chip and could launch later this year. However, this timing may place the Mac Studio slightly behind other Apple products in terms of chip generation. Reports indicate that the M5 Ultra Mac Studio may arrive around the same period as MacBook Pro models powered by Apple’s M6 chip.
