AMD Radeon RX 8000 “RDNA 4” GPUs: A Throwback to RX 5000 with New Navi 44 XL GPU

AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 “RDNA 4” GPUs are set to follow a similar product segmentation as the RX 5000 “RDNA 1” lineup, focusing primarily on mainstream audiences.

Recent reports indicate that AMD will not pursue the enthusiast segment with the upcoming Radeon RX 8000 series. One of the high-end Navi chips, Navi 4C/4X, was canceled mid-development. Instead, the available graphics cards will feature monolithic designs aimed at mainstream users.

According to information shared by Golden Pig Upgrade on Weibo, the RDNA 4 GPU family will mirror the RDNA 1 series. The RDNA 1 series featured a range of mainstream and budget GPUs integrated into various Radeon RX 5000 graphics cards, spanning from the Radeon RX 5300 up to the Radeon RX 5700 XT. The lineup included three primary chips: Navi 14, Navi 12, and Navi 10.

Likewise, the RDNA 4 lineup is expected to include several GPUs based on the Navi 48 “GFX1201” SKU and the Navi 44 “GFX1200” SKU. It’s not yet confirmed whether the RX 8000 series will be the official branding for the RDNA 4 lineup, but a logical progression from RX 7000 to RX 8000 seems plausible. Alternatively, AMD could skip to RX 9000 or adopt a new “Radeon AI” naming convention.

The Radeon RX 8000 “RDNA 4” GPUs are anticipated to deliver performance levels between the RX 7900 and RX 7700 series. The Navi 48 GPUs are speculated to match RX 7900 GRE and RX 7900 XT performance, while Navi 44 GPUs might perform similarly to the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT. These performance estimates are preliminary, and more details should emerge in the coming months.

Four SKUs are reportedly in development, with one configuration offering up to 56 compute units, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory over a 256-bit bus, and up to 20 Gbps pin speeds. Additionally, a 192-bit variant of the Navi 48 GPU is in the works, whereas Navi 44 is expected to be a 128-bit part.

Here’s a summarized look at the rumored RX 8000 series GPUs:

– Radeon RX 8X00 XTX: 56 CUs, 16 GB GDDR6, 640 GB/s memory bandwidth, 64 MB Infinity Cache
– Radeon RX 8X00 XT: Details TBD, 16 GB GDDR6, 576 GB/s memory bandwidth, 64 MB Infinity Cache
– Radeon RX 8X00 XT: Details TBD, 12 GB GDDR6, 456 GB/s memory bandwidth, 48 MB Infinity Cache

The Navi 44 XL GPU has also been spotted, although details are scarce. The Navi 48 GPU was identified as “3A-102-G28201” a few months ago. The GPUs in this series are expected to come in XTX, XT, and XL variants, with XL being the most cut-down configuration.

The AMD Radeon RX 8000 “RDNA 4” GPUs are projected to be unveiled next year at CES, with the launch following in the first quarter.

Here is a brief overview of AMD’s RDNA generational GPU lineup:

– Radeon RX 5000 (RDNA 1, 7nm)
– Radeon RX 6000 (RDNA 2, 7nm)
– Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3 / RDNA 2, 5nm/6nm)
– Radeon RX 8000 (RDNA 4, 5nm/3nm)

Each series has its respective flagship, high-end, mid-tier, and entry-tier GPUs, with the RX 8000 expected to follow a similar structure.
