A new custom AMD FSR 4 DLL has reportedly been added to Steam and Proton Experimental, suggesting that Valve is testing a way for games with FSR 3 support to access AMD’s newer upscaling technology more easily.
If this works as expected, it could be a big win for Steam Deck owners, SteamOS users, and other handheld gaming PCs. Instead of relying on unofficial workarounds or manually replacing files, players may eventually be able to benefit from FSR 4 through Proton itself.

The file being discussed is called amdxcffx64.dll, which is tied to AMD’s FSR 4 upgrade path. Valve seems to have adapted this file for Steam and Proton Experimental, the testing branch of its Windows-to-Linux compatibility layer.
That matters because Proton is what allows many Windows games to run on SteamOS and Linux. If FSR 4 support is integrated at this level, games that already include FSR 3 could potentially gain access to the newer upscaling path without players needing extra tools, complicated setup steps, or manual DLL swaps.
