Apple has recently unveiled the iPhone 16 Pro models, showcasing the company’s latest innovation, the custom-built 3nm A18 Pro chip. However, many users may not notice a significant performance boost from the last generation. Excitingly, next year’s iPhone 17 Pro models are anticipated to come equipped with the A19 Pro chip, which, according to recent insights, will be based on TSMC’s advanced 3nm architecture.
Next year’s iPhone 17 series will feature processors crafted using TSMC’s enhanced N3P process, derived from the sophisticated 3nm technology. Contrary to earlier reports hinting at a shift to 2nm chips for the iPhone 17, it appears Apple will continue with the 3nm chips a bit longer. However, the transition to TSMC’s cutting-edge N3P process seems to promise significant performance improvements.
For those unfamiliar, the terms 2nm and 3nm refer to chip manufacturing technologies, primarily focusing on the size of transistors. Smaller nanometer measurements translate to better performance and efficiency as they allow more transistors to fit within a single chip.
Notably, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has not only revealed details about the N3P 3nm chips for the iPhone 17 but also hinted that specific models of the iPhone 18, slated for release in 2026, will be pioneering the 2nm technology. The current A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro is based on the N3E process, aimed at enhancing efficiency and ensuring better yields. This makes it a safer choice for the current shipments. In contrast, TSMC’s advanced N3P process is engineered to prioritize performance while maintaining similar efficiency levels.
Given the complexity of manufacturing the N3P chips, there might be lower yields compared to the N3E process. This could potentially result in higher production costs, which might be reflected in the final price for consumers. It’s important to note that these are speculative insights, and the ultimate decision lies with Apple.
While the N3P technology is expected to deliver notable performance enhancements for the iPhone 17 lineup, the true groundbreaking advancements will likely be seen with the 2nm chips in the iPhone 18 lineup. As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated on these exciting developments.
