The Radeon RX 7900 GRE had a short-lived stint on the market, lasting just about a year with quite limited availability. If ongoing rumors hold any truth, it may soon become impossible to find this GPU in the coming weeks. Reports suggest that the RDNA 3-based AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is set to vanish permanently. Many have observed its scarcity, especially in the European market, where only one model manufactured by ASUS remains. ASUS has mentioned that their stock is limited, with no promise of further shipments from AMD.
In North America and beyond, the situation mirrors this scarcity. A survey of prominent online retailers like Amazon, Newegg, Walmart, and Best Buy reveals that the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is missing in action at its suggested retail price. If found, prices soar near $1000 or the units may come as open-box items, signaling that this model might soon be gone forever. Despite no official statement from AMD, it seems securing one of these GPUs is becoming increasingly difficult.
Initially launched in 2023 for the Chinese market, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) expanded globally by early 2024. This GPU was positioned between the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT, utilizing the die from the latter but in a more limited form. Featuring a narrower 256-bit bus width compared to the 320 bits on the RX 7900 XT, its performance aligned more closely with the Radeon RX 7800 XT, providing stiff competition against competitors like the RX 4070 at launch. The graphics card boasted 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM, 5120 shaders, and had a power rating of 260 watts.
Looking ahead, AMD is gearing up for the introduction of its RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs, anticipated during CES 2025, with chips based on Navi 44 and Navi 48 dies. Although the entire Radeon RX 7000 lineup faces eventual obsolescence, the RX 7900 GRE seems to be the first to bow out, even before some RX 6000 models are phased out. Despite its market departure, AMD will continue to honor warranties and provide driver support for the RX 7900 GRE.
