Tesla’s Cybertruck and Powerwall 3 Team Up to Keep Homes Powered Longer in Emergencies

Tesla has begun rolling out a long-awaited Cybertruck PowerShare feature that allows the electric pickup to work with Powerwall as part of a home backup system during outages. The update gives Cybertruck owners a new way to extend emergency power at home, turning the truck’s large battery into reserve energy when the grid goes down.

The capability was first announced alongside the Cybertruck in November 2023, but it has only now started becoming available. At launch, it is limited to Powerwall 3 owners who complete Tesla’s opt-in survey. Support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ systems is expected to arrive later this year.

Tesla says the Cybertruck can add more than three extra days of backup power for a typical home. The company describes the truck’s battery as being similar to adding “9 additional Powerwalls” worth of capacity. That comparison is based on Tesla’s estimate of about 30 kWh of daily household energy use. Since the Cybertruck has a 123 kWh battery pack, the calculation makes sense on paper and highlights why the truck can be useful during extended outages.

The biggest change is how the Cybertruck and Powerwall now work together. Previously, Cybertruck owners could use PowerShare to power a home through a separate PowerShare Gateway and Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector, without needing a Powerwall. That setup allowed the truck to supply electricity directly to the house.

The new Powerwall integration works differently. It requires a Powerwall 3 system along with compatible Tesla backup hardware, such as Gateway 3, Backup Gateway 2, or Backup Switch. Tesla also states that a PowerShare Gateway cannot be used on the same system when this new setup is active.

In this configuration, the Powerwall supplies energy first during an outage. Once the Powerwall needs additional support, the Cybertruck steps in as backup reserve capacity. The truck can also recharge the Powerwall while the home remains disconnected from the grid, helping keep essential appliances and systems running for a longer period.

However, the feature is focused on extending backup duration, not increasing total power output. The combined output remains capped at 11.5 kW. That means the Cybertruck does not add extra simultaneous power beyond the system limit. Homeowners still need to manage high-demand devices carefully during an outage.

For example, running central air conditioning and charging another electric vehicle at the same time may not be realistic during backup operation. But for keeping lights, refrigeration, internet, outlets, and other essential home systems powered, the Cybertruck can significantly increase how long a household stays online.

This update makes the Cybertruck more than just an electric pickup. For owners with compatible Tesla energy equipment, it can become a major part of a home energy backup plan. By combining Powerwall storage with the Cybertruck’s large battery, Tesla is giving households a practical way to prepare for blackouts, storms, and other grid disruptions.
