Tesla Unveils 500 kW V4 Supercharger, Promising 30% Faster Charging for Cybertruck and Model Y Juniper

Tesla is revving up its charging game with the introduction of its advanced V4 power supply cabinets, set to power the newly installed, taller Supercharger posts. Debuting next quarter, these V4 Superchargers promise an impressive output of up to 500 kW per post. This upgrade is particularly exciting for Cybertruck owners, who benefit from an 800V architecture, enabling them to charge 30% faster than before, potentially hitting full charge in under 20 minutes. The soon-to-be-released Model Y Juniper refresh will also share the 800V powertrain, marking it as Tesla’s second vehicle to boast this technology.

For current Model 3 and Model Y owners, the benefits of the new Superchargers might not be as pronounced since they still run on Tesla’s 400V platform. However, the anticipated launch of the Model Y Juniper facelift next quarter could coincide with the V4 cabinet rollout, potentially allowing drivers to gain more than 250 miles of range in just about 15 minutes.

Beyond just powerful output, these new V4 Supercharger cabinets bring a range of improvements. Accommodating both 400V and 1000V EV architectures, they are well-equipped to charge vehicles like the Tesla Semi at a whopping 1.2 MW rate. Furthermore, each cabinet now supports eight Supercharger posts instead of four, eliminating the need for a DC bus between cabinets. This streamlines deployment, reducing both installation costs and time while enhancing reliability.

Despite having only half the number of cabinets per station compared to previous models, these new cabinets are engineered with modern and highly reliable electronics, offering triple the power density compared to their predecessors. Even during peak times when all posts are in use, charging remains significantly faster than current rates, distributing about 125 kW of power per stall.

Tesla’s innovation aligns it with competitors in China like Nio and Xpeng, who have been offering fast charging with outputs reaching up to 800 kW. As Tesla continues to expand its fleet of 800V vehicles, with the Cybertruck and Model Y Juniper leading the charge, the company is poised for substantial growth in the EV market.
