Tesla has announced a series of hardware upgrades to the Model Y, aimed at enhancing its appeal in the increasingly competitive Chinese electric vehicle market. These updates include the introduction of the Hardware 4.0 (HW 4.0) suite, which brings significant improvements to the vehicle’s built-in computer, an array of driving functions, and overall performance capabilities.
The Model Y, Tesla’s popular all-electric sports utility vehicle, will be equipped with the new Full Self-Driving (FSD) Computer 2, alongside an array of upgraded Autopilot sensors, upgraded cameras, and a radar unit. The comprehensive camera upgrades will span across various parts of the vehicle, including the front, pillar-mounted, fender-positioned, cabin, and side cameras.
These improvements follow the deployment of HW 4.0 in other Tesla models such as the Model X and Model S in the United States. Enhancing the Model Y with this advanced hardware is seen as a strategic move to maintain Tesla’s market presence, especially after the company forecasted a relatively subdued growth for the year 2024.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, also hinted at ongoing work on a future Hardware 5.0 during the most recent Tesla earnings call. Additionally, Musk’s update on new research and development aligns with Tesla’s promotional efforts in China, including price reductions and promotional tours for upcoming models like the much-anticipated Cybertruck.
