Square Enix has rolled out a new “Group Customer Harassment Policy” aimed at safeguarding its executives, employees, and partners from excessive and inappropriate demands from its customer base. In the passionate world of gaming, fan fervor can sometimes escalate to unexpected levels, with requests for updates and changes taking on a life of their own.
The tipping point for this policy seems to stem from the reception of “Dawntrail,” the latest expansion for the beloved game “Final Fantasy XIV.” This expansion marks a significant shift in the game’s storyline—moving away from the epic saga of Hydaelyn and Zodiark to a more understated quest involving political intrigue in the land of Tural.
At the heart of this narrative is Wuk Lamat, a new side character generating mixed reactions from fans. Introduced towards the end of the previous installment, “Endwalker,” Wuk Lamat is a female Hrothgar with significant political ties, and she recruits the Warrior of Light for her ambitious journey to ascend the throne. Criticism has arisen over aspects of her character, voice, and dialogue, but unfortunately, discourse has been marred by hurtful, transphobic remarks directed at the character’s voice actress. This negativity has hindered constructive discussions about the game’s writing, creating division among the game’s community.
The backlash against Wuk Lamat seemingly plays a role in Square Enix’s implementation of this new policy, which outlines various behaviors deemed unacceptable. These include acts of violence, harassment, racial and religious discrimination, privacy violations, unreasonable demands for product exchanges or apologies, and more. The policy indicates that the company could withhold services from offending individuals and pursue legal measures against severe misconduct.
With this move, Square Enix is setting a boundary to ensure respectful interaction among its gaming community while upholding the dignity of its employees and partners. The company appears committed to fostering a positive environment where fans can continue to enjoy their favorite stories without crossing lines of social acceptability.
