Hopes for a Final Fantasy 9 remake announcement may have taken another hit. A new claim from veteran RPG journalist Alex Donaldson suggests that Square Enix’s long-rumored modernization of the beloved classic has been placed on hold indefinitely, even though the project was reportedly already in an advanced stage of development.
According to Donaldson, the Final Fantasy 9 remake was not being planned as a massive multi-part project like the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. Instead, it was said to be a single, more focused release that would modernize the original RPG while keeping the scope more contained. For many fans, that approach sounded like exactly what Final Fantasy IX needed: a polished, faithful revival rather than a complete reinvention spread across several games.
The latest update, however, paints a much less encouraging picture. Donaldson claimed in a forum post that the project was “very far along” but has since “stalled out” and is no longer actively moving forward. No clear reason was given for the pause, leaving fans to speculate about whether the issue is budget, scheduling, development priorities, or Square Enix shifting resources toward other major projects.
Rumors surrounding a Final Fantasy 9 remake have circulated for years, with multiple industry insiders previously suggesting that the game was real and in development. More recent comments from known leaker NateTheHate also hinted that progress had slowed, which led to growing concern that the remake may have been delayed or quietly shelved.
Excitement rose again around Final Fantasy IX’s 25th anniversary, as many fans hoped Square Enix would finally reveal the remake or at least tease future plans for the classic RPG. Instead, the company shared anniversary artwork featuring fan-favorite characters such as Zidane and Vivi. Donaldson suggested that some of this art may have originally been intended for packaging or promotional material, which made its public appearance feel even more bittersweet for fans waiting for a proper announcement.
For now, Square Enix appears focused on other major entries in the franchise, including the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. That project has shown how ambitious and resource-heavy modern remakes can become, especially when classic games are expanded into large-scale AAA experiences.
Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, previously commented on the challenge of remaking older Final Fantasy titles, noting that some projects could require four or even five installments if handled with the same level of ambition as Final Fantasy VII. That kind of development scale can place enormous pressure on studios, even ones as experienced as Square Enix.
That is why the reported direction for the Final Fantasy 9 remake sounded so appealing. Rather than transforming the game into a sprawling multi-game saga, it was allegedly designed as a more compact modernization. Final Fantasy IX’s structure, tone, and world design could make it well suited for a faithful remake with upgraded visuals, refined gameplay, improved pacing, and modern quality-of-life features.
Many fans have long argued that Final Fantasy IX does not need to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. Its charm comes from its fairy-tale atmosphere, memorable cast, emotional story, and classic fantasy identity. A carefully updated version could introduce Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, Steiner, and the rest of the cast to a new generation while preserving the heart of the original PlayStation classic.
At the moment, there is no official Final Fantasy 9 remake release date, and Square Enix has not confirmed that the project exists. The latest claim should therefore be treated as unofficial until the publisher makes a formal statement. Still, the report has left many fans disappointed, especially because it suggests the remake may have been closer to reality than previously expected.
