Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 Could Become a Major Storage Challenge for Players
Final Fantasy XIV Online is officially heading to Nintendo Switch 2, but players may need to clear a serious amount of space before entering Eorzea. Square Enix has confirmed that the Switch 2 version of the popular MMORPG will require 117 GB of storage, making it one of the largest games currently known for the new Nintendo console.
The Switch 2 comes with 256 GB of internal storage, which means Final Fantasy XIV alone will take up roughly 46% of the system’s built-in capacity. For players who plan to keep multiple big games installed, this could quickly become a problem.
A massive download for a massive online world
Final Fantasy XIV has grown enormously since its original launch in 2010. Over the years, Square Enix has expanded the game with major updates, new regions, high-resolution textures, cinematic cutscenes, voice acting, jobs, dungeons, raids, and multiple expansions.
That long-term growth helps explain the huge file size. The Switch 2 version includes a unified installer, meaning players will need to download the full game package regardless of which edition they buy. Whether someone chooses the Starter Edition, Complete Edition, or Complete Collector’s Edition, the storage requirement remains the same.
This is especially important because the game’s expansions, including Dawntrail, have added a significant amount of content. Even players who start with a lower-cost version will still need to reserve the full 117 GB on their console.
Final Fantasy XIV becomes one of the biggest Switch 2 games
Before this reveal, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was among the largest known Switch 2 titles at more than 102 GB. Another large release, Kingdom Hearts Collection I–III, requires around 131 GB. Final Fantasy XIV now joins that group of storage-heavy games and may be one of the first titles to make many Switch 2 owners seriously consider expanding their storage.
On other platforms, Final Fantasy XIV is already known for being a large install. The game takes around 100 GB on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, while the Windows version can reach approximately 140 GB. Some fans may have hoped the Switch 2 version would benefit from stronger compression, but the final requirement shows that the handheld version still needs a major amount of space.
MicroSD Express cards may become essential
Because of the large install size, MicroSD Express cards could become a key accessory for Switch 2 owners. These faster storage cards are designed to support the demands of modern games, and Final Fantasy XIV may be one of the titles that pushes players toward buying one.
However, expanded storage may not be cheap. Memory prices remain a concern, and MicroSD Express cards are expected to be more expensive than traditional microSD cards. For players already buying a new console and a major online RPG, the added storage cost could make the total investment feel much higher.
A subscription adds another cost
Storage is not the only thing players need to consider. Final Fantasy XIV Online requires a monthly subscription after its optional free trial period. That means Switch 2 players will need to pay beyond the initial game purchase if they want continued access to the full MMORPG experience.
Existing players from PC, PlayStation, or Xbox can carry over their progress, which is good news for longtime fans. However, they will still need to subscribe to play on Switch 2. For newcomers, the free trial offers a way to test the game before committing, but anyone who wants to experience the full adventure will eventually need an active subscription.
Why fans are still excited
Despite the storage demands and subscription fee, Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 has strong appeal. The idea of playing one of the world’s most successful MMORPGs in a portable format is a major selling point. Being able to run dungeons, complete quests, craft, gather, or explore Eorzea on a handheld system could make the Switch 2 version especially attractive.
Final Fantasy XIV has built a loyal global community thanks to its storytelling, character progression, cooperative gameplay, and regular content updates. Bringing that experience to a Nintendo console could introduce the game to a new audience while also giving existing players another flexible way to play.
A big game that may shape Switch 2 storage habits
The arrival of Final Fantasy XIV Online on Switch 2 highlights a growing issue for modern gaming: file sizes are getting larger, and internal console storage fills up quickly. With a 117 GB requirement, the game may force players to rethink how they manage their libraries.
For some, that means deleting older games to make room. For others, it means investing in a MicroSD Express card. Either way, Final Fantasy XIV is likely to become one of the first major Switch 2 releases that turns storage expansion from a nice extra into a practical necessity.
Final Fantasy XIV Online launches for Switch 2 on August 4. Players planning to jump in should prepare ahead of time, because this adventure will need plenty of room before it can begin.
