Spotify Finds Payoff in Allowing External Payments on iOS

Spotify has recently highlighted the positive impact of directing its iOS users to external payment links, noting a surge in Premium subscriptions. The company shared these insights in an amicus brief supporting Epic Games in its ongoing legal struggles with Apple over alternative payment methods on the App Store. This move comes after a U.S. District Court ruling that favored Fortnite’s creator, Epic Games, ultimately compelling Apple to allow U.S. app developers to guide customers to external payment options.

With this change, iOS developers can now inform users about web billing alternatives and potential discounts for direct payments. Spotify quickly updated its iOS app to leverage this modification, now offering transparent subscription costs, website purchase links, and direct audiobook sales.

The changes have paid off, as Spotify’s data reveals a noteworthy uptick in iOS users transitioning to Premium subscriptions. The company emphasized that the court’s order has yielded substantial benefits for both developers and consumers. These transformations have sparked new product innovations previously unattainable without the recent injunction.

Spotify’s revamped “Premium Destination Page” targets free users, providing them with pricing details and a checkout link to ease the upgrade process. This update has maintained a steady conversion rate on Android but significantly boosted the rate among iOS users, underscoring the impact of Apple’s compliance.

Interestingly, within just days of launching new product options, Spotify noticed a positive trend in audiobook purchases as well. Although Spotify hasn’t disclosed exact figures, the company reaffirmed its support alongside Microsoft and others for Epic Games as Apple appeals the court’s decision.

Despite Apple’s appeal efforts, which include trying to maintain its previous App Store policies, the courts have yet to grant any motion allowing a reversion to old practices. As these legal proceedings continue in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Apple faces growing pressure, highlighted by Fortnite’s return to the U.S. App Store after a lengthy absence.

This ongoing saga highlights broader implications for app developers and consumers, as the landscape of digital transactions continues to evolve.
