Spiders, the French studio known for story-driven action RPGs like Greedfall and Steelrising, has officially shut down. The closure comes just weeks after the release of Greedfall: The Dying World, a prequel tied to the developer’s biggest success, bringing an 18-year run to an abrupt end and making Spiders the first major studio to fall amid parent company Nacon’s deepening financial crisis.
The studio confirmed the news in a Facebook post dated April 29, 2026, choosing a blunt, no-nonsense tone to address fans directly. Spiders said it had finally received clear confirmation that it is being liquidated after a long period of uncertainty. In practical terms, the studio explained that it will stop operating immediately. While a planned DLC is still expected to be released through Nacon, Spiders made it clear that this is the end of the road for the team itself. The developer also warned players that it will no longer be able to respond to support questions, advising anyone with issues to contact Nacon.
The shutdown has sparked anger beyond the fan community. France’s video game workers’ union, STJV, publicly condemned the decision, calling it a “premeditated and deliberate choice” by Nacon’s management. The union urged players to boycott the publisher and argued that the liquidation narrative doesn’t reflect the full story, saying the outcome was the result of deliberate decisions rather than an unavoidable business failure. STJV also highlighted the human cost: 71 employees now face job losses and major disruption to their careers and livelihoods.
Nacon’s problems have been building for months. A key turning point reportedly came in February 2026, when major shareholder Bigben Interactive failed to repay a €43 million partial payment tied to a bond loan. That missed payment pushed Nacon into insolvency proceedings and led to multiple subsidiaries and studios being put up for sale, including Spiders. No buyer ultimately stepped in, and now the consequences are hitting the development teams directly.
Earlier in 2026, Nacon had insisted its upcoming slate would stay on track while the company worked through financial turmoil. With Spiders now closed, concerns are growing across the industry that other Nacon-owned studios could be at risk next, with observers watching closely to see whether more closures follow.
For fans of Greedfall, Steelrising, and Spiders’ distinct brand of ambitious “eurojank” RPG design, the news marks the end of a studio that carved out a recognizable identity through rich worldbuilding, scrappy experimentation, and passion-driven development—even when budgets were tighter than the genre’s biggest players.
